PHILADELPHIA – Mother nature was not anyone’s friend in this week’s edition of Philadelphia football. Three matchups took place, with two of them having scores that the weather definitely played a factor in.

Turnovers doom School of the Future in sloppy 13-6 loss to John Bartram

The first of two games of the day that featured a scoreless first half, John Bartram and School of the Future combined for a whopping 10 turnovers in this contest, with each team committing 5 turnovers each. Ultimately it was the Braves that emerged victorious, taking down the Firebirds 13-6.

For John Bartram, Stephan Green was the star of the game, hauling in a touchdown pass from Tyler Freeman in the third quarter, as well as picking off School of the Future’s quarterback Kariff Parker-Moore twice.

After a scoreless first half in the pouring down rain, the conditions eased up a bit in the third quarter, allowing us to finally get our hands on some offense. The Firebirds broke the deadlock first on a 68 yard catch and run from Shyfi Eason that gave the Firebirds a 6-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

That lead for School of the Future lasted for a little over a minute and a half of play before the Braves drove down the field and scored a tying touchdown on a 9 yard pass to Stephan Green, evening the score at 6-6.

Late in the fourth quarter, a poor punt from the Firebirds set up John Bartram at School of the Future’s 35 yard line, setting them up for the go ahead score that came on a 2 yard carry from Eric Chisholm Jr with just 28 seconds left.

School of the Future was unable to generate anything on their final drive, sealing the 13-6 win for the Braves. The win marked John Bartram’s fourth consecutive victory following their loss to Bishop Shanahan in the opening week of the season.

Imhotep mercy rules Abraham Lincoln 54-14

The second game of the day featured much less rain than the first game, which allowed for a lot more offense. Following a 42-0 drubbing of Belmont Charter last week, Imhotep cruised once again this week to a 54-14 victory over Abraham Lincoln.

Kassan Chappelle scored twice on the ground for the Panthers, once in the first quarter and once in the second quarter. Chappelle after his two touchdown performance currently stands at 8 rushing touchdowns so far this year.

The passing game showed off in the first as well, with Joe McLeish throwing 4 touchdown passes in the first half alone, helping the Panthers to a 40-8 halftime lead. McLeish connected with By’ire Murphy twice, Brian Culmer once, and Basil Reid once.

The Panthers really put the game away early in the second half. On a possession where Abraham Lincoln drove all the way down to Imhotep’s goal line, Issiah Muhammad coughed up the football and had it scooped up by Tristan Alexander and returned all the way back for a touchdown.

Alexander’s touchdown put Imhotep up 46-8 midway through the third quarter, officially putting the game into a mercy rule. Idris March ultimately scored the last touchdown in the game for the Panthers, his second of the game.

The Panthers are now 4-1 on the season, winning their third straight game after a one point loss to DeMatha Catholic in the second week of the year.

George Washington prevails late in 12-6 win over Belmont Charter

The second game of the day that was scoreless going into halftime, this one was actually scoreless going into the fourth quarter. Both teams struggled offensively for most of the game, but in the end it was the George Washington Eagles who emerged victorious, taking down Belmont Charter 12-6.

We didn’t see the game’s first points until the 7 minute mark in the fourth quarter when Hakeem Johnson connected with Aiden Ivery for a 65 yard catch and run touchdown that brought Belmont Charter’s crowd to life.

With a 6-0 lead and momentum seemingly in the Tigers’ favor, George Washington snatched it right back with a kickoff return touchdown by Kierre Stewart on the very next play, tying the game back up at 6.

A bad punt from Belmont Charter set the Eagles up at the Tigers’ 34 yard line. Just two plays later, Kyair Wright scrambled 37 yards to the goal line, fumbled the ball, and then recovered it in the end zone for the go ahead score.

With the Tigers trailing 12-6 with two minutes left, their offense tried to make one last push to keep their hopes alive. They were able to drive down to George Washington’s 37 yard line, but on the next play, Nafis Watkins fumbled the ball before the Eagles recovered it, securing a 12-6 win for George Washington.
