Despite the rain, Holy Cross picks up second victory Saturday afternoon

Crusaders get back-to-back wins since 2024

SOUTH CENTRE TWP- With the rain pelting the field at Wen Cerra Field at Columbia Montour Vocational Technical School, did not deter the the Crusaders of Holy Cross Saturday afternoon before a sparse crowd as the visitors from Dunmore defeated the Rams by a score of 41-16. The win gave the Crusaders their second consecutive wins since 2024 win the defeated Holy Redeemer and Montrose in back-to-back weeks.

CMVT got off to an early start, however by going 76 yards on their opening drive capped off by ten yard touchdown run with a Blake Sponenberg run. Sponenberg also converted the two-point conversion making the score 8-0 with 7:23 left in the opening quarter.

The ensuing kickoff Luca Berardi ran back the ball back 75 yards for a Holy Cross score making the score 8-6 as the point-after was no good.

The Rams would turn the ball over on their next possession and the Crusdaers took over at the CMVT 22. Chase Rutkowski pushed the ball across the goal line from a yard out capping off an eight play drive. Rutkowski connected with Berardi for the conversion making the score 14-8 with 2:39 left in the opening quarter.

Sponenberg found an opening along the home sidelines for a 62 yard score and tying the game at 14 with still 2:19 to play in the quarter.

A fourth down gamble by the Rams to go for it early in the second quarter, came up short and gave the Crusaders great field position at the CMVT 35, from there running back Chris Transue covered 35 yards. The try for two failed leaving the score at 20-14.

After yet another fumble on the Rams, giving the ball back to Holy Cross at the CMVT 24 yard line. Rutkowski hooked up with Berardi, who was covered man-to-man in the far right side of the end zone. Rutkowski converted the conversion on a pass to Tyler Kohut making it 28-14 as the teams headed for the locker rooms.

Holy Cross started the second half with a 61 yard drive in eight plays again Rutkowski found Kohut on a 14 yard scoring pass to make the score 35-14 with 8:36 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Crusaders would score one more time as Noah Davis plowed in for a two yard score making it a 41-14 score with 3:58 still to play in the fourth quarter.

CMVT had two chances to score in the fourth quarter, but two outstanding defensive goal line stands denied the Rams from getting across the goal line, but after the second stop, thE Rams defense tackled Transue in the end zone for the final score of the day.

Holy Cross (2-2) will try to extend their winning streak to three games next week against Carbondale (2-3). The Chargers lost to Honesdale Friday night by a score of 51-20. Columbia Montour Vo Tech is now (1-6) and won;t be in action again until October 10th when the will face Lower Moreland (4-1) at home. The Rams received a forfeit win over Jenkintown when the Drakes canceled their season due to lack of numbers. Lower Moreland will face Academy of the New Church on October 2nd
