The Suburban One League-Continental Conference pitted the Upper Dublin Cardinals(3-0) (2-0) against the previously unbeaten Bensalem Owls (2-1) (1-1) in an all-out dog fight on Friday night. Both teams had high expectations coming into the contest. Upper Dublin having outscored its first two opponents 81-7 and Bensalem 67-0, I thought for sure this was going to be a shootout. What I witnessed on Friday night was anything but a shootout. Both defenses were coming up big repeatedly throughout the first half. What I initially anticipated being a high scoring affair ended in a final of 23-12. My hat goes off to both defenses because you kept your teams in this battle all night. I would also like to send a special thought and prayer to the Bensalem player who was injured in the contest late in the third quarter.
Bensalem started the game at their own twenty-two-yard line. On their very first play from scrimmage quarterback Matt Saunders handed the ball off to running back Ashton Barnes who scampered 78 yards to the house. The extra point was blocked, and the score was 6-0. Two series later Bensalem found itself on their own four-yard line and an errant snap would result in an Upper Dublin safety and the lead was cut to 6-2. The rest of the first half would see both teams exchange possessions a few more times. On one of the final plays of the first half Upper Dublin’s defense would again come up with a huge stop as defensive back Quincy Pauling picked off Saunders.

The beginning of the third quarter belong to the Cardinals. On their opening drive quarterback Colin O’Sullivan hit running back Tawfiq Bartlett in the flat who then went for twenty-five yards for the touchdown.

After a successful two-point conversion the Cardinals took a 10-6 lead. The UD defense forced a three and out. A few plays later Bartlett found a hole for a thirty-two-yard gain which set up O’Sullivan at the seventeen-yard line. The ensuing play resulted in O’Sullivan finding halfback Tristan Cairnes in the endzone for the Touchdown.

A successful PAT from UD’s kicker Owen Carl stretched the lead to 17-6. Not to be outdone, After the kickoff Bensalem running back Josiah Leonard took the handoff seventy yards for the score. A failed two-point conversion cut the lead to 17-12 and that’s how the third quarter came to and end.

The fourth quarter would see one more score and that would be it. More than halfway through the quarter Upper Dublin moved down the field and found itself on the Bensalem twenty-yard line. Running back Nyfise McIntyre plowed his way through the line, juked a defender and put on a sick spin move during the attempted tackle and landed in the endzone for the score. A failed PAT would make it 23-12.
