Red Raiders go for the Seven-Peat

Coatesville

Matt Ortega’s Coatesville Red Raiders have raced to six straight ChesMont National titles, losing only one conference game in the process. Coatesville has also been the dominate District One team during their run. This year they hope to add to their historic Title streak to seven in a row, much of the Red Raiders success will depend on the left arm and legs of returning QB Senior Harrison Susi. Susi is coming off a season of 4,000 total yards, while throwing and running for a combined gaudy 46 touchdowns.

While many of the Red Raider’s skilled players, including Tommy Ortega have headed off college, Coach Ortega is confident with Susi at the helm that seventh straight title is in the Red Raiders sites.

Michael Milano’s Whippets of Downingtown West are coming off a disappointing 5-5 season that left them out of the District One playoffs. Coach Milano returns many players on both sides of the ball, saying, they have been terrific through the off season,” the Whippets are hoping to bounce back and challenge Coatesville for the ChesMont title. West will once again be big upfront with 6’7” 310lb Ryan Howard and 6’5” 290lb Cooper Young anchoring the line, new comer Quinn Henicle, will take over as signal caller, Ryan Mulville who had almost 1,000 yards in total offense will return as RB, with Jake Kucera and Dean Hangey handling the wideout positions.

WVU Commit Cooper Young

On defense Senior middle linebacker Harrison Hayford, along with safety Dalton Downie and DT AJ Saggese return to lead a solid unit. Getting off to a good start in their three challenging non-league games will be the key to the Whippet’s year. If they can build some cohesion and momentum heading into the league portion of their schedule Milano thinks he cannot only challenge Coatesville for the league championship, they can be a force in the District One playoffs.

Downingtown East

Bo Horvath will lead the way for the Cougars

It’s no secret to anyone that the key to Michael Matta’s Downingtown Cougars team is running the ball, while playing a tough attacking defense. On offense the Cougars return 1900 yard rusher Bo Horvath, to their ground and pound offense. Horvath, an All State lacrosse player, will be heading to play lacrosse at Layfette next year. Downingtown East’s trademark has been their O line, the play of returning starter 6’8” 290 lb Junior tackle Adham Abourya will go a long way toward getting Horvath over the 2,000 yard mark this year. Jamy Jenkins 6’ 3”194 lbs will return for his third year as starting QB, last year he threw for an impressive 2,234 yards, including 22 touchdowns. On defense the Cougars will be led by two more lacrosse All Staters, Saint Joseph’s bound Michael Waite returns as strong safety and Leigh commit Sam Barton will be back calling the defensive signals at middle linebacker. Chad Lovenguth will be back at DE, in Matta’s 3-4 defense, the balance of the defense will made of a mixture of players that had some varsity playing time last year, including Ryan Shannon and Owen Lammy at LBs, and Michael “Paddy” Leo at free safety. Downingtown non-league schedule is brutal, starting with a repeat trip to Pennridge, followed visit from state semi-finalist State College, then a trip up the Northeast extension to state quarter finalist Delaware Valley. The Cougars then end with Coatesville and Downingtown West, those games will probably settle the ChesMont title.

Bishop Shanahan

Sean Bracken

Shanahan is coming off an epic season that led the Eagles to a heart breaking state 4A semis lose to McDevitt. Coach Paul Myers will be losing 26 seniors off the District One title winners, it will be a battle for the Eagles to compete in the ChesMont National. The Eagles return just three starters, Pat Gallagher, Sean Bracken and Luke Lorenz, Myers expects new comer OL Jayden Snook to get a lot of snaps.

The young and inexperienced Eagles will need to build and come together in their non-league games, as always the undersized Eagles will not be an easy out.

Avon Grove

Thad Binstead will carry the load

Avon Grove’s Joe Coffey returns for his third year at the helm of the Red Devils, hoping to build on last year’s squad. Avon Grove went 3-3 in non-league games, Coffey will use the progress they made in those games to improve on last year’s season.

RB Thad Binstead is their leading returning offensive player, rushing for 418 yards last year. Avon Grove returns several lineman, after an aggressive off season lifting program, Coffey will depend on the big boys upfront to lead the offense and anchor a bend but don’t break defense.

““We will look for our offensive line to anchor us in 2022, returning two, three-year starters in Senior (Captain) Josh Oswald & Junior Lucas Laganelli (2nd Team All Chestmont-National), along with returning Senior Center Nate Tesche. The entire offensive line will be equally fast & physical for many different backs to carry the football Senior (Captain) Thad Binstead (2nd Team All Chestmont-National), Sr. Frank McKeown, Jr. Harrison Watson, & So. Zach Sheridan. Our first-year Jr. Quarterback Joey Marczely will command the offense with receivers, Sr. Noah Brown, Jr. Gavin Picard, returning Jr. TE Cole Walsh, and newcomer Sr. TE Andrew Czerpak. We will look to put our athletes in the best position to make plays and control the tempo of the game that best fits our personnel as the season progresses.” “We will look for our youthful defense to get better every single day as we return four starters on defense. We will be very athletic and fast to fly to the football on every down. The defensive line will be quick off the ball to disrupt the opponents’ backfield. We return three starters in the secondary where we can match the opponent’s speed and experience. Players to watch on defense are Senior (Captain) Jose Garcia on the defensive line, Sr. (Captain) Owen Yoder at safety, Junior cornerback Trevor Dosenbach (2nd Team All Chesmont-National), and Junior Cole Walsh will anchor the middle of the defense at linebacker.” “We return Jr. Kicker Adam Okonowicz who has both a strong and consistent leg. We will count on him to execute PAT’s, FG’s, and look for him to put the ball into the endzone on kickoffs. We will need to be consistent with covering both kicks and punts. On the returning end of special teams, we will look for explosive plays to put our offense in better field position.”
