Coatesville and Downingtown East entered the game with one goal in mind and that was to become the Chesmont National Champions heading into the playoffs.  Both teams came into the game with an (8-1) record, so unfortunately one team had to take a backseat and that was the Cougars.

The rain and gusts of wind never seemed to chill throughout the entirety of the game, but to Coatesville you would think it was just another dominate win for them.

Downingtown East just couldn’t capitalize off of Coatesville mistakes.  On the Raiders first series, they fumbled an option play that was recovered by The Cougars.  Shortly after, Red Raider’s Nolan O’hara picked off Jamy Jenkins who had a rough night throwing the ball in these drastic weather conditions.

Immediately after, the Red Raiders fed off of that turnover with a Harrison Susi 38-yard TD pass to Tommy Ortega to put some points on the board.  Coatesville missed the extra point which kept the lead at 6-0

The Raiders forced a three and out which lead to an East punt that landed on Coatesville’s 48-yard line.  An off sides penalty and Susi keeper, set up a 24-yard TD run by Ashon Wesley.  Wesley carried the load for the Red Raiders, after registering three touchdowns on the ground that went for 24, 33, and 65 yards.

The Cougars only score came from a Michael Waite 80-yard kick return touchdown in the 2nd quarter.  East found their way into field goal range and the red zone, but couldn’t convert on their fourth and shorts when needed the most.

Coatesville had their way on the ground and East didn’t have an answer for Wesley.  He scorched a 62-yard run but was tackled short of the goal line.  They then attempted to convert a 4th and 9 which was an incomplete pass and turnover on downs.

East couldn’t find a groove, was held to a stalemate inside their 20, and had a bad punt that gave Coatesville possession on the East 29.  The Red Raiders had a TD negated due to a holding penalty.  East bailed them out again by committing a pass interference call as time expired in the 2nd half.

“They outplayed us, they came ready to play and we had a hard time tackling the quarterback,” said East head coach Mike Matta.

“Their defense is really aggressive and they kept us on our heels the whole time.  You’ve got to give them credit, they were well prepared and they took it to us.  They played in the same weather that we did, they won the game and we lost it.  They outplayed us and out-coached us and came with a good plan,” said Matta.

The clock was at zero, but due to the flag, Coatesville still had another chance to score and they did.  Susi connected with Ortega again which extended the lead even more.  RJ Rickabaugh also saw the end zone in the first half.

Coatesville’s defensive line brought the intensity every play, the weather didn’t impact their play and earned the right to six-peat as Chesmont National champions.

“Our goal all year has been the six-peat, five years we won it outright and one year we shared it, so all year, our whole motto was [hashtag] #6Peat and that was a goal to get that done,” said Coatesville head coach Matt Ortega.

“Our kids know how big this game is, and there is alot of history behind this whole thing in terms of our program and coaches that are with us and coaches that are over there.  When i first got in this league in 2009, they were the team and you had to catch them, hats off to Coach Matta and their program they have made our program better,” said Ortega.

Coatesville (9-1) captures the Chesmont title and looks to keep their momentum in playoffs moving forward.  Downingtown East (8-2) also clinched a playoff spot and look to put this game in the past and get ready for the second season in playoffs.
