UPPER CHICHESTER: Last week the Conwell-Egan Eagles found themselves on the wrong side of a 56-3 contest with Maryland’s River Baptist. In that game, Conwell Egan was held to negative rushing yards. Friday night was a different story as Conwell-Egan dominated the host Chichester Eagles 38-0 spoiling Chichester’s first game in the renovated Apichella Memorial Stadium.
Just how dominant was Conwell Egan? They ran the ball 44 times for 342 yards on their way to a 395-yard effort. The defense was just dominating holding Chichester to a mere 25 yards of total offense including negative 2 rushing.
“We’ve been practicing all week just getting off the ball and moving people back to get our backs downfield.” Conwell-Egan offensive lineman Michael Hanna said adding “Team effort everyone was out there firing off the ball.
“Our O-Line is tough we ran into a buzzsaw last week, they were hungry all week just to get back out and prove themselves that they can play.” Conwell-Egan head coach Jack Techtmann said.
The main benefactors of Conwell Egan’s line play were Sr Sincere Fairey 9 carries for 117 yards and Monty Zoryea (8-90). After the game, Fairey was quick to give the love to linemen saying, “I can’t take the accountability I just got to give it to my offensive line, they got off the start and gave me a good push and I just ran behind them.”
Conwell-Egan’s offensive line in addition to Hanna was made of Chase Walters, Furio Fusco, Connor Horger, and Michael Sagbaicela.
Fairey wasted little time getting started on the game’s first play from scrimmage he busted through the Chichester defense and raced 49 yards down to the Chi 27, four plays later QB Aubrey Kimbrough kept it himself punching it from 8 yards out.
After forcing Chichester to a three-and-out on their opening possession Conwell-Egan marched 70 yards on 10 plays before Zoryea punched it in the endzone from 9 yards out.
From there Conwell-Egan turned the game over to their defense and the defense responded by keeping Chichester in the negative yardage wise till their final drive of the first half.
“That’s (Tony) Dragani (Defensive Coordinator), Pete Dragani Eric Kiewiak, and the defensive staff just do a great job. After what we went up against last week they were talking all week we got to get back on track and nothing better to get back on track than a shutout.” Techtmann said.
Conwell Egan needed only two offensive plays into the second half to extend their lead to 21 with Zoryea breaking through the defense and racing 64 yards to the endzone.
In the fourth quarter, Johnny Austerberry booted a 28-yard field goal while Kimbrough connected with Chris Toombs for a 39-yard touchdown and Jaeden Thenor added a 15-yard touchdown to complete the scoring for Conwell-Egan.
Conwell-Egan will now enjoy an off week before returning to action when they open Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division play at Lansdale Catholic on September 14 at 1 pm. Chichester next week goes onto the road to play Coatesville on Friday at 7 pm.
