After having their game postponed last week against Academy Park, the Downingtown East Cougars made their return to Kottmeyer Stadium to face off against the fifth ranked Avon Grove Red Devils. Unfortunately for Avon Grove, this game was nothing short of a beat down. The game started out with a couple great runs by Ayden Harris of Downingtown East, that led to a 10 yard passing touchdown by quarterback Jj Helverson to running back Michael Brown, to put East up 7-0.
On the next possession by Downingtown East, Helverson threw an absolute dart to wide receiver Caden Walsh, to put them up 14-0 with still 6:22 left in the first quarter. Helverson came into the game with a passer rating of 238, and was 80% on completed passes with 9 touchdowns and no interceptions.
While this sounds very impressive, it would be hard not to argue that the player of the night goes to Ayden Harris. Tonight Harris went absolutely berserk, with a season high of 5 touchdowns. He ended the night with 17 carries for a 176 yards and now has over 1000 yards for his career at Downingtown East. His 5 touchdowns put East up 42-0 in the first half agaisnt Avon Grove.

Coming out of the half realizing Avon Grove did not have an answer for East, both teams decided to put in their backups for the rest of the game. Because tonight was Senior Night for Downingtown East, Coach Mike Matta made sure that all of his seniors got playing time tonight. The final score of the game was a 49-0 blowout for East. Now they look ahead to next week as they play one of their big rivals, the Coatesville Red Raiders.
After the game when asking Coach Matta how they’ll prepare for facing off agaisnt Coatesville next week he said, “We’ll have our work cut out for us so we’ll have to come ready to play. When you play Coatesville you can’t beat them without your best”.
