North Penn QB Ryan Zeltt hits his receiver for a first down

The undefeated North Penn Knights out of the Suburban One League-National Conference took on the Pennridge Rams in a league matchup on Friday night at Crawford Stadium in Landsdale. The visiting Rams brought a 3-1 overall record into the matchup and a stingy defense which is anchored by senior linebacker Phil Picciotti and until Friday had only given up 21 total points through their first four games. North Penn on the other hand brought a high-powered offense who in their first four games was averaging 42.5 points per contest and a defense who was allowing an averaging of about 13.75 points per game. Something in my gut told me that this was going to be a defensive battle though I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t hoping for a high scoring shootout.

The first ten minutes of the opening quarter were exactly what I had anticipated. Both teams’ defenses were making huge stops and either could muster much production. Pennridge got the scoring started late into the first quarter.

With 1:26 remaining senior tight end Phil Picciotti took a pitch from junior quarterback Xavier Dantzler and powered his way in from fourteen yards out. The kick after was good the Rams took a 7-0 lead which is how the quarter would end.

The second quarter opened with a huge run by North Penn senior running back Khalani Eaton who broke away for a 53-yard gain. The very next play Eaton would again take the handoff and this time reach pay dirt from seven yards out.

The point after was good and the score was even at 7 a piece with 11:51 left to play in the half. The North Penn defense and senior Darren Miller held the Rams to a few plays before they had to punt. On their ensuing possession the Knights would again wow the crowd when junior quarterback Ryan Zeltt hit senior wide receiver Levi Carroll in stride down the left sideline for a 75-yard score. The point after was good and the Knights took a 14-7 lead. Both teams’ defenses would hunker down the rest of the half and not allow any more points.

The third quarter would see the Knights control most of the clock behind some powerful running from senior running back Khalani Eaton, however the Pennridge defense wouldn’t allow him near the endzone. It wasn’t until 9:56 seconds left in the fourth quarter when Eaton took a pitch to the left from Zeltt 17-yards out. After the extra point was good the score was 21-7. About two and a half minutes later with 7:25 left in regulation the Pennridge offense sparked some life when junior running back Connor Lelii sprinted through a few defenders from 25-yards out for the score. The extra point cut the deficit to just a touchdown at 21-14. From there the North Penn defense wouldn’t allow Pennridge another opportunity.

North Penn (5-0) (3-0) remains undefeated and will host the Neshaminy Redskins (1-3) who play today at 1pm next Friday. Pennridge (3-2) looks to get back in the win column when they host Central Bucks West Bucks (4-1).
