Mayhem’s Game of the Week

The Game:

Central Bucks West @ Quakertown

Friday, September 8, 2023

Kickoff: 7 pm

Alumni Memorial Field

700 Park Ave, Quakertown, PA 18951

The Details:

Central Bucks West Bucks

Head Coach: Rob Rowan (6th Season)

League: Suburban One-National Conference(6A)

Season: (2-0) overall (0-0) Conference

Last Week: Won, 37-7 over Upper Dublin

Buck’s Notables: The Bucks are on a revenge tour this year. Their season ended at the hands of Garnet Valley in the District Championship Game, 35-7 last year. Fast forward to Week 1, the two squads met at War Memorial Stadium where the Bucks walked away with a 17-13 victory behind a strong performance by Cooper Taylor who made the transition from RB to QB after Bucks 3-year Starter & Captain Ganz Cooper went down with an ACL injury. Week 2 saw them march into Cardinal Stadium and stomp Upper Dublin 37-7. Last season the former 5A District 1 Champs beat them 35-7 in Week 2. In preparation for the upcoming battle, I met with Junior athlete (RB/DB/K) Ryan Clemens and talked about the Bucks heading to Quakertown to take on the Panthers. First, I needed to know about the Garnet Valley game and its effect on the team. The Jags had a 34-game win streak against District 1 opponents snapped by West.  Ryan responded, “It felt good to finally get that win over GV, and that game definitely has given us confidence moving forward in the way our team can perform on both sides of the ball.” Quakertown has some firepower behind the arm of Vince Micucci and his plethora of options to throw at, what do you guys have to do on defense to be successful? Ryan stated, “Defensively We’re gonna need to fly around and make plays. If we can cover down, our D-line will put pressure on Micucci.” Offensively the Buck’s rushing attack has put up over 525 yards in two games on the ground, against such a stout defense What do you guys have to do to be successful? Ryan replied, “Offensively we just need to keep spreading the ball around to keep the defense guessing.”

Quakertown Panthers

Head Coach: George Banas (14th Season)

League: Suburban One-Continental Conference(6A)

Season: (1-1) overall (0-0) Conference

Last Week: Won, 38-17 over North Penn

Panther’s Notables: Week one saw the Panthers drop a heartbreaker to 5A powerhouse Southern Lehigh 28-21 out of the Schuylkill Colonial League-Gold, who will make a deep playoff run again this season barring anything crazy happens. Week 2 allowed for another winning streak to be snapped. This time the Panthers marched into historic Crawford Stadium and beat the host Knights 38-17. This was the first victory against North Penn for Quakertown since 1977! That’s right it’s been 44 years since the Panthers beat the Knights.  You know this reporter had to know how the win has affected the team. I sat down with SR WR/FS Max Morris, and this is what he had to say, “We really wanted this game going into it. We were just on our game as a team it really showed what we are capable of moving forward. We are gonna go week by week.” Defensively the Panthers must stop a rushing attack that has put up over 525 yards on the ground in their past two games What must you do to be successful against their run game? Max simply said, “For this CBW game I think our defense has to keep them contained not letting anyone outside, and just do what we did last game and get 11 players to the ball.” On the other side of the ball, you guys have an arsenal of weapons What do you have to do to put up points on this hard nosed defense? Max said, “On offense, we have shown what we can do when we all work as a team and do our jobs. Vince (Micucci) does a great job keeping the positive energy and making big plays that keep the team rolling.”
