Head coach Dan Chang congratulates his team on their SOL Crown

Willow Grove- If there was any doubt heading into Friday night who the top dog was in the Suburban One League-American Conference, there shouldn’t be anymore. I know for one thing; this reporter has none now. The Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials (8-2,5-0) charged into Willow Grove and handed the Upper Moreland Golden Bears (8-2, 4-1) a 56-20 pounding. The Colonials claimed their second straight SOL crown on Friday night.  With the win the Colonials have all but locked up the 4th seed in the District One 5A playoffs and will look to face the 13th seeded Vanguards of Sun Valley (5-5, 3-4) in the opening round. The Golden Bears are also in the 5A bracket and are currently sitting at 9th which will likely face the 8th ranked Great Valley Patriots (7-3, 5-2).  As kickoff approached and the stadium filled up, the Bears had everything going for them from a momentum standpoint. It was senior night, they had a white out in the stands, it was homecoming, & the conference championship was being played in their backyard.

PW’s Junior Nazye Boggs didn’t let that get to him as he took the opening kickoff 89-yards to get the Colonials on the board first.

I kind of just seen the lane and I was like, I got to go. Before the game I kept telling myself we got to do good. We got this.  Plus, I was due for a kickoff return TD,” said a gleaming Boggs after the game. PW caught UM sleeping on the very next play when the colonials squib kicked it and were able to recover the ball.  The following play resulted in a 28-yard scamper from senior running back Tommy Hannon.

After the PAT was good the lead was 14-0 with 9:41 to go in the first quarter.  Upper Moreland’s next possession didn’t get any better. Senior QB Shawn Herbert thought he saw a player in the flat and senior LB Gregory Feinberg stepped in front of the throw and took the interception back 30 plus yards to set the Colonials up at the UM 12-yard line. 2 plays later Junior running back Luke Winterbottom took the pitch around the end and went untouched into the endzone for the first of three scores.

Not to be outdone and trying to gain their composure Upper Moreland finally found itself on the board. With 5:41 left in the quarter, senior QB Shawn Herbert found a wide-open Senior running back Stephen Broderick who slipped past a defender for a 43-yard touchdown that was absolutely beautiful.

The extra point was made, and the deficit was cut to 21-7.  A few minutes later PW’s senior running back Tommy Hannon took the handoff from his QB and bulldozed his way in from 1-yard out. The PAT was made, and the lead was extended to 28-7 with 3:53 to go in the first.

The Bears couldn’t muster anything on the next drive and the 1st quarter concluded 28-7.

In the second quarter Upper Moreland got on the board again when senior running back Stephen Broderick took the handoff from Herbert into the endzone.

the extra point was blocked, and the score was 28-13 with 9:34 to go in the half. One minute later the colonials where yet again knocking at the door of another score. This time senior QB Aiden O’Brien took a designed QB keeper 12-yards untouched into the endzone.

With 8:20 to go in the half the lead extended to 35-13.  Upper Moreland’s next drive would again sputter out and the colonials would take over again and march right down the field.  With 4:37 to go in the half, senior QB Aiden O’Brien found an open Luke Winterbottom for a 12-yard passing score. The PAT was made and the lead now 42-13.

Upper Moreland again facing an uphill battle couldn’t muster an attack as the colonial defense was unwavering in the trenches. On PW’s next possession Luke Winterbottom took the handoff and went 69-yards to paydirt. The PAT was made, and the lead now stood at 49-13 which is where we sat at halftime.

Both teams had unsuccessful drives to open up the second half but on the next PW drive senior Aiden O’Brien would not be denied as he took the ball himself from 5-yards out to make it 56-13 after the extra point was made with 7:05 to go in the 3rd quarter.

At this point in the game, the second team for the colonials started subbing in for the starters and were still not allowing the Bears anything. The Bears would grind out the next few minutes and with 6:20 left in the game Stephen Broderick pushed his way through a few defenders for his 3rd and final score. The PAT connected but the game was far out of reach 56-20.

The PW reserves finished out the drive and secured their second consecutive SOL-American Conference title. After the game, on his team’s victory & winning another championship, senior QB Aiden O’Brien said, “It feels great, I mean we been working this all summer, all year, & it was our goal from the start and it absolutely feels amazing.”
