NEWTOWN SQUARE PA –For many seniors and their parents, it has begun to sink in that this regular season is coming to a close. After a solid start to the season that was stopped in its tracks, the Marple Newtown Tigers looked to put together a winning streak again. Dressed in their whites, the Ridley Green Raiders took the road to continue their push to the playoffs. Ridley pushed the gas pedal in the second half against Marple, defeating them 42-7.

As the stadium sat quietly, the routine coin toss took place. Marple won and elected to defer, Ridley sat back to receive and got ready to bring down the hammer.

Ridley’s Stephen ODonovan had a 20-yard return to set the team up at midfield. Ridley’s offense powered down the field. The Green Raiders found themselves two yards short of the goal line, but a handoff to Paul Jackson would put six on the board, and a PAT to follow would put them up 7-0 with 8:45 left in the first quarter. The rest of the first would be your standard old-school football, on the ground and through the air. An insane catch by Marple’s Joey Yukenavitch that he would haul in on a 4th and 3 for a solid 22-yards. Their drive would end in a turnover on downs. The first quarter would become history, with a Ridley 7-0 lead.

A quick second quarter would begin with a Ridley stampede upfield. First down, after first down, would sit Ridley just shy of the endzone. Ryan Carroll would go under center and power it through for six. Another perfect PAT would put them up 14-0 with just about half the quarter remaning. Marple would piggy-back off Ridley to take a 4 minute drive the opposite way, after Brian Box would return the kick-off to give them shortfield. Taking advantage of that, Marple, ready to feast, came out shotgun. QB David Bertoline, would find Paul Defruscio in the endzone for a score. The uprights sat still in peace as the PAT went right inbetween. Marple cut the deficit to 14-7. Ridley got the ball with only 2:30 left in the half, but for them it was plenty. The two minute drill was not necessary, as Ridley found the endzone in only one minute. That score being a connection from QB Ryan Carroll to Kimir Stephenson. With a good PAT, Ridley pushed Marple right back into a two possession deficit going up 21-7. Stephenson would go on to say after the game “My Quaterback, Ryan Carroll, was on the money”.

An athlete, who puts his teammates right there with him in his success. Marple, had the ball in their possession had very little time to do anything, but found themselves in a possible scoring position after two nice passes and a timeout. Paul Jackson from Ridley was not ready to allow any chance of free points, Marple needed to earn them. A pass deep, but underthrown into double coverage, would be intercepted by Paul Jackson. With no need to sweat, Ridley took a knee and headed off to reconvene at half-time. Ridley still held the lead 21-7.

The vengeful Tigers came out of the locker room ready for the second half, but so did the Green Raiders. The third quarter would last 22 minutes, but would see two Ridley touchdowns. The first coming from no other than Paul Jackson who would handle it on the ground with 3:54 left in the third. Tacked on the good PAT to go up 28-7. The second touchdown came by way of capitalizing on defensive turnovers. An interception by Ridley’s Izayan Brown would put Ridley back in possession. Owen Bosak would then break lose out of a sweep for a 50-yard touchdown. With a good PAT to back it up, Ridley scores another unanswered touchdown. As the buzzer sounds to signial the end of the third Ridley sat comfortably on the scoreboard at 35-7.

As clock quickly ran off the scoreboard and into the abyss, Ridley entered the redzone a quick pass from QB Ryan Caroll to Kimir Stephenson again, would put the Ridley up five possessions. Now 42-7 with 7:54 left in the game, starters slowlyed dissolved as the backups came into to get some time. Bobby Soper would stamp a seal write on the game with a huge run. First down, Ridley would line up in victory formation, it was 42-7 and their win.

After the game, Paul Jackson spoke a little about what the momentum of this win means “… game nine, [it] is coming to an end soon, so we had to bring all the energy to this game”.
When asked about his two TD, one INT, and one fumble recovery game, he said “It feels good, but my teams behind me too, so we had a good push on offense and defense we were adjusting to all their motions…”
Yet again, another player with a skill that for him, only shadows what the team could do together.
Another player that made his highlight reel better was Kimir Stephenson. A man that takes “actions speak louder than words” right into his game. With the two touchdowns to his name, he played a game many will never brush upon in high school. For him though, his team’s success means so much more than his own. Describing his season in one word as “dedicated” only proves his goal to master his craft and help his team out.

Ridley winning, will now give them two wins in back to back weeks, once again starting a win streak. It also improves them to 6-3 as they look forward to playoffs. In the central league game, Marple Newtown could not find themsleves in the win column, despite coming off a win. Marple now falls to 5-4 and looks to take on the undefeated Strath Haven Panthers led by Sam Gilligan. While Ridley plays Upper Darby next week, they hope to send Upper Darby to the losing record world. Both hard matchups, coming from both teams they will face.
