Sun Valley’s Julz Kelley hauls in a TD pass from Kennedy Poles

SPRINGFIELD: Anthony Ellis and Julz Kelly first became teammates on the Aston A.A Bandits when they were six-years old. Thursday night the duo from Sun Valley took field for the final time has teammates and their chemistry showed has they guided the Blue aka East team to 22-12 victory over the Red (West) in the 43rd annual Delaware County Hero Bowl which was played at Cardinal O’Hara.

Ellis and the East squad wasted little getting on the board has on the games opening drive they marched 76 yards on 11 plays before connected with Delaware County’s all-time receiver Penn Wood’s Kennedy Poles for a 20-yard touchdown. Poles would run in the two-point conversion for the 8-0 lead. Poles finished the game with 7 catches for 89 yards and a touchdown pass.

The West would get on the board in the second quarter with 30-yard touchdown pass from Haverford Jake Ruane to Radnor’s Sean Mullarkey. Radnor’s Dylan Van Dusen extra point was blocked.

East’s Coach Bubba Bernhardt reached into his bag of tricks for games next score as Poles connected with Kelly for a 20-yard strike to give them a 15-6 lead heading into intermission.

The East extended their lead to 22-6 on their first possession of the third quarter when Ellis connected with Kelly who showed his speed that made one of the most dangerous players in the state has, he raced 40-yards for the touchdown. Kelly finished the game with three catches for 80-yards along 12 carries for 65-yards was named Offensive MVP for the East. Kelly will be taking next year off to focus on academics before hoping to continue his football career. With taking a year off Kelly took the day the soak the whole experience in he said post game.

Ellis who this season threw for 2020 and 17 touchdowns benefited from being the only Quarterback on the East roster finished the game completing 15 of 20 passes for 161 yards. Next season he will be attending Williamson College of Trades where he will continue his football career.

The West cut the lead down to 22-12 when Lower Merion’s Matt O’Connor connected with Upper Darby’s Shawn McCullough for a 30-yard touchdown. The West then took advantage of a special Hero Bowl rule that gives a team whose down 10 or more the chance to get ball back instead of kicking off to the other team. Unfortunately, the West couldn’t take advantage of their extra possession has O’Connor was intercepted by Penn Wood’s Michael Dargan with 8:48 left in the game.

Chester’s Tylee Williams-Clark 3 tackles1 sack was named Defensive MVP for the East squad. Ruane who completed 7 of his 8 passes for 98 yards was named the West teams offensive MVP while Strath Haven’s Jake Fisher 3 tackles took home Defensive MVP honors for the West.
