Hello and welcome to this week’s installment of What the Heck’s Happening in Districts I & XII this week. Week Zero is in the books and what a week it was we saw several big-time performances, records fall and milestones reached. Let’s look at what went down and what could happen this week.
Milestone Victory for Radnor: Friday Night’s 26-8 victory over Chichester marked the 500th victory in the history of Radnor football. The Raptors become the 17th member of District 1 to reach the 500-win plateau.
Phoenixville Joins 600 Win Club: Friday’s Nights 41-16 victory over Reading marked the Phoenixville Phantoms 600 victory in program history.
Zollers Breaks Spring-Ford Record: With his 252 passing yards against Souderton Friday night Mizzou commit Matt Zollers became the all-time leading passer in Spring-Ford History history. Zollers currently sits at 5,760 yards. Hank Coyne (5,595) was the previous record holder.
Beals Becomes Roman Catholic All-Time Leading Passer: With his pass completion on Friday night Roman Catholic QB Semaj Beals became the All-Time Leading Passer in Cahillite history. Only a Jr Beals now has over 5,000 yards passing in his career which beat the previous record held by Michael Keir.
Jackson Breaks Cheltenham’s Single Game Passing Record: Cheltenham’s Sophomore QB Kendall Jackson made his first start a memorable one. In the Panthers 28-20 loss to Wilson West Lawn Jackson set the record for passing yards in a single game with 253 yards on 17 of 32 passing. His top two targets were Soph Carsen Giddiens 5 catches for 63 yards and Ahsaiah “Zeke” Upchurch (5-93).
Big Games for Pair of Sun Valley Vanguards: The Sun Valley Vanguards lost to Penncrest Friday night 33-20 that’s despite the best efforts of QB RJ Scharrer and WR Josh Yanonis. Scharrer threw for 321 yards two touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown, while Yanonis hauled in six passes for 219 yards and 1 touchdown.
Sun Valley to Put Together Military Care Packages: The Sun Valley Vanguards are putting together a Military Care Package Drive fans can drop off donations of Liquid IV, Single Serve Drink Mixes, Non-Melting Candy, Tastykakes, Beef Jerky, Cookies, and Trail Mix along with Baby Powder, Deodorant, Sunblock, Baby Wipes, Chapsticks, Toothpaste, and Toothbrushes at the Vanguards next three home games 8-30 vs Great Valley, 9-20 vs Oxford and 9-27 vs Kennett
North Penn Hosts Food Drive: The North Penn Knights Football and Cheerleading teams teamed up and gathered over 400 lbs of food that was donated to Manna on Main Street in Lansdale
Action Down at the Shore: In what is becoming a tradition for Philadelphia area teams with three matchups heading down to Ocean City High School’s Carey Stadium to battle just a stone’s throw away from the beach. This year’s matchups in OCNJ are:
Abraham Lincoln vs Germantown Academy Friday 1 pm
LaSalle vs Malvern Prep Friday 7 pm
Father Judge vs Lansdale Catholic Saturday 11 am.
Central League Action Kicksoff: After a week of non-league the Central League kick-offs League play this week. Last Season Garnet Valley, Strath Haven, and Springfield were Tri-League Champions.
Will’s Big Games of the Week
Strath Haven at Penncrest Thursday 7 pm: The Panthers and the Lions renew their rivalry in the annual Media Bowl
Marple-Newtown at Springfield Friday 7 pm: For the third time in the past 12 months the Tigers and Cougars do battle. The Cougars swept the two meetings last season.
Downingtown West at Smyrna De at Abessinio Stadium Friday 8 pm: The Whippets one of the Honorable Mentions in 6A by PFN travels down to Mid-Atlantic Pig Skin Classic held at Salesianum’s Abessinio Stadium to do battle with the Eagles who enter the game as the 8th ranked team in Delaware
Malvern Prep vs LaSalle Friday 6 pm at Ocean City High School: Two of the top teams in the Philadelphia area do battle down the shore.
Neumann-Goretti at Pope John Paul II Saturday 1 pm: The Saints ranked 5th in 3A by PFN head up to Royersford to battle the Golden Panthers ranked 3rd in 4A by PFN
St Joseph’s Prep at St. Edwards (Oh) Saturday 2 pm: The Hawks the number 1 ranked team in 6A by PFN head out to Ohio to battle the Nationally ranked Eagles.
