The meeting between Greenville and Sharpsville/West Middlesex players was an improbable game in June of this year, but a couple emergency school board meetings pulled off the improbable when it was determined that West Middlesex hopes of more players joining the team before fall never materialized.

The Sharpsville Area School Board met on Thursday, August 5 and voted 7-1 in favor of the football co-op with West Middlesex. Sharpsville approved the agreement one night after the West Middlesex School Board met and voted for the co-op. The co-op would allow West Middlesex band and cheerleaders to participate. According to the SHS Athletics Twitter feed, a vote on Thursday includes no changes to the Blue Devils’ logo or colors.

The co-op merged two proud and successful programs. The Blue Devils have won eight District 10 championships while the Big Reds have captured three. Both football teams, like many schools across District 10, have seen declining participation in football over the past year. The co-op will be evaluated at the end of the three-year agreement.  Sharpsville and West Middlesex were scheduled to open the 2021 season with a game at McCracken Field on Aug. 27.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association had given final approval to an arrangement that would allow West Middlesex football players to take to the gridiron for the next three years. The agreement comes after West Middlesex announced last month that its program was short of players and their season in jeopardy. The agreement, which covers this season and the following two seasons, has already been approved by school boards in both districts. The agreement is in effect immediately. All home games except one will be played at Sharpsville. In addition, there will be no changes to the logo or school colors. Sharpsville will remain Blue and White.

Congrats to all involved for making this happen, and especially Sharpsville who will give up a playoff spot with the merger. This was a lesson in humanity that we could all learn from.

Last Night, the Sharpsville team wore the WM Red to honor their tradition.
