Butler football left the WPIAL for a District 10 schedule several years ago in hopes of improving by playing an easier schedule.

In what has been an ongoing battle, the Butler Golden Tornados have found a victory. Back in March the WPIAL ruled that, because they are still a district 7 team, Butler could not participate in the PIAA district 10 playoffs but instead must participate in the district 7 playoffs. The PIAA held a hearing and sided with the WPIAL with Executive Director Bob Lombardi stating in essence that allowing teams to pick and choose what district playoffs they want to participate in would basically make having districts a waste of time.  After that hearing Butler decided to go through the state court system.

Today a judge ruled that  “The conduct of the PIAA amounts to arbitrary and capricious discrimination against the Butler Area School District.” The ruling states that Butler is eligible for the District 10 playoffs in 2022 and 2023.  Butler left the WPIAL for a District 10 schedule several years ago in hopes of improving by playing an easier schedule.

Lombardi says the PIAA will appeal the ruling as soon as possible.
