Trevon Tate had 111 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Canisius used a 20-0 second-quarter run to down Erie High 41-20 Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders got a big game from quarterback from Tyler Baker, who accounted for 297 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns.

Baker completed 11-of-24 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 125 yards with two scores.

“Their quarterback is tough, and that is what I was worried about,” said Erie head coach Rob Matz. “At any point anywhere, he can take it to the house. When he throws the ball, he makes good decisions out there. He’s tough to defend.”

All the while, Erie struggled to move the ball in the first half due to penalties. The Royals had two great chances to take the lead in the first half.

The first of which came when the Royals stripped running back Joe Dixon, recovering it in Crusaders territory.

Erie drove inside the 10-yard line before Trevon Tate was stopped a yard short on a 4th-and-2 from the 6-yard line.

Following a punt, the Royals took over at the Crusader 33-yard line. After driving into the red zone, the drive was halted due to procedure penalties.

“We shot ourselves in the foot play after play in the first half,” said Matz. “The number of penalties we committed was absolutely horrible. We were very undisciplined. Our kids came off the bus slowly. Every time we made a big play, it was hold or some penalty, we shot ourselves in the foot way too much.”

Canisius then broke the game open when Baker would score on runs of 57 and 60 yards, while also tossing a 17-yard touchdown to Riley Simpson.

“I told our guys at halftime that we gave up three super-soft touchdowns in the first half,” said Matz. “I was very upset about that. They were soft touchdowns. They scored three touchdowns, and I felt we took three off the board in the first half.”

Erie would crack the scoreboard on Trevon Tate’s 6-yard run in the third quarter. Tate led all rushers with 111 yards on 28 carries.

The Royals also scored fourth-quarter touchdowns on Marquell Darnell’s 11-yard reception from Jahlil Grandberry and Jermaine Selby’s 10-yard run.

Darnell led all receivers with 105 yards on just five catches.

“Both Selby and Darnell stepped up big for us in the second half,” said Matz. “I didn’t know where our guys were in the first half, and they didn’t know. In the second half, they all stepped up and started making plays.”

Canisius also scored two touchdowns in the fourth on Baker’s 3-yard run and Robert Glaser’s 7-yard reception.

Erie high now falls to 3-4 on the season. The Royals will try to regroup next week when they host St. Joseph’s Collegiate Academy.

“For us, we may have four seniors on the field, all our young guys played great,” said Matz. “We’re going to fine moving forward in our season.”
