Waterford: Fort LeBoeuf built a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter, then held on for a thrilling 17-14 win over Grove City Saturday night.

“Grove City is a great team, and we’ve had the privilege of being able to play them in the regular season and the playoffs the last couple of seasons,” said Fort LeBoeuf interim head coach Justin Blose. “We knew this would be a test of us when you have a well-coach team like them coming to town. We were blessed enough to come out on top tonight.”

The Bison avenged a 30-0 loss to the Eagles in last year’s District 10 playoffs with the win. It also marked the first time in history that Fort LeBoeuf had defeated Grove City.

“We’re always using past experiences to try and help you out,” said Blose. “We used that as a little motivation, and our kids knew they were going to in for a good ball game.”

Taking the opening kickoff, the Bison held the ball for over eight minutes and went on a 14-play 72-yard drive capped off with Justin Leuschen’s 2-yard run.

“That was huge,” said Blose. “Our offensive line did a great job for us. They were holding their water and moving the line of scrimmage. It was nice to hold the ball and keep their high-powered offense off the field.”

LeBoeuf extended their lead on a 36-yard field goal by Isaac McGuire.

Grove City then went on a 95-yard drive to score right before halftime as Zach Rodgers scored on a 1-yard run.

Joe Hathaway had a 32-yard reception from Hunter Hohman on the drive.

“You never want to come out on the short end of the stick,” said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “We knew it was going to be a four-quarter game. They’re a hard-nosed football team. They made one more play than us tonight.”

Fort LeBoeuf led 10-7 at halftime.

The Bison were able to briefly extend their lead in the third quarter on Adam Lichtinger’s 49-yard pass from McGuire.

That marked the first completion of the game for Fort LeBoeuf. McGuire was 2-of-10 passing for 58 yards and the score.

The Eagles answered right back on Anthony Pereira’s 72-yard touchdown from Hohman cutting the deficit to 17-14 after three quarters.

Grove City had its chances to win the game but overcome two fourth-quarter turnovers.

“When you turn the ball over, those are the things that are hard to overcome,” said Mowrey. “Our defense did a fantastic job. After their first drive, our defense stepped up.”

In business in Bison territory early in the final stanza, the Eagles looked to when Hohman connected with Hathaway on a 20-yard pass. However, Hathaway was stripped of the ball with Fort LeBoeuf recovering.

Tristin Harris then put an end to the Eagles’ next drive as he intercepted Hohman at midfield. Harris also ran for a game-high 62 yards on 15 carries.

Grove City had one final chance starting at their 25-yard line with just over a minute to play and one timeout.

The Eagles moved the ball into Bison territory, but Hohman was sacked around midfield by a host of Bison.

“Right now, we’re focused on moving forward and getting ready for next week,” Blose concluded.

Sophomore quarterback Hohman had nice for Grove City, going 18-for-33, passing for 258 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Hathaway had three receptions for 93 yards, Gavin Lutz chipped in with ten catches for 78, while Curtis Hovis added 40 yards rushing.
