Justin Schell accounted for three of the Trojans four touchdowns as Greenville won their 27-26 District 10 Class 1A Semifinal against Cambridge Springs on Saturday night.
Brandon Hoover scored three times as well for Cambridge Springs. However Greenville’s defensive stand on a potential winning two-point conversion attempt by Cambridge Springs was enough to secure the victory for the 11-1 Trojans.
Earlier in the year, Greenville won at Cambridge Springs, 17-0 in an intermittent light rain. In the rematch, Cambridge Springs and Greenville traded turnovers, including the Blue Devils fumbling on the first scrimmage play of the game. However, despite that, Cambridge Springs scored first on a Jordan Washington 15-yard touchdown run.
Taking the 6-0 lead into the second quarter, Cambridge Springs relinquished the lead when Teagan Calvin scored on a one yard push up the middle followed by a successful kick attempt.
That’s when Hoover scored his first of three touchdowns from 1 yard out. Though a two point run attempt was short, giving Cambridge Springs the 12-7 lead. Schell and the Trojans answered just before halftime, with a 31-yard interception-denying, acrobatic mid-air robbery to score the leading touchdown. Though the PAT was also no good. Greenville stood tall, 13-12 at the intermission.
In the second half, hoover scored his second touchdown on a 7 yard pass, as well as converted the two-point run, to lead 20-13 with just 1:43 left in the third quarter. One minute and 17 seconds was all it took for the Trojans to tie the game. Justin Schell breaking several tackles on a 48-yard touchdown catch and run.
In the fourth quarter, another Trojan possession ended with Schell finding the endzone on a 69-yard catch and run. With a defender draped over him, Schell extended for the catch, broke free, and raced the remaining 62 yards for the score. The kick was good and Greenville led 27-20 with 9:27 remaining.
Late in the game and driving, with several third or fourth down conversions, Cambridge Springs found the endzone in an unorthodox fashion. Hoover was hit by Greenville’s Nick Solderich, popping the ball loose and into the enedzone from six yards out. Brandon Hoover tracked it down, falling on it, for the touchdown with 3:06 left.
Opting for the win and not a potential tie, Cambridge Springs once again called on Brandon Hoover to do the heavy lifting. A handoff up the middle was snuffed out by Rudy Gentile and the rest of the Trojans interior linemen. Giving Greenville the 27-26 victory and a rematch with Wilmington in the District 10 Class 1A Championship Game on Saturday night at Hickory. Kickoff set for 7pm.
