Henwood throws six touchdowns, Hornets blowout North East

Coming off a bye week, Hickory showed no sign of rust as the Hornets blitzed North East 56-0 Saturday at Wilmington High School.

“I thought we played great together as a team,” said Hickory head coach Bill Dungee. “We’re always looking for new guys to make plays. We had eight different players score tonight. Defensively we had a few hairy areas, but we came away with the shutout.”

The now 7-3 Hornets got a monster game from quarterback Michael Henwood who passed for 354 yards and threw touchdowns to six different receivers.

“Mike was efficient and just works and works,” said Dungee. “Every day, he has worked to get better at the things he’s needed to work on – I couldn’t be more proud of him.”

Ramarion Whitehead led those receivers with 111 yards on three catches. His 50-yard touchdown opened the scoring.

Hickory then broke the game open with three second-quarter touchdowns.

Henwood connected with Rocco Iacino for a 38-yard touchdown. Nate Richards then hauled in a 35-yard touchdown from Henwood as time expired in the first half.

Sandwiched in between those touchdowns was Hunter Stoots 75-yard run. Stoots and Braelin Stewart combined to rush for 241 yards, Stoots had 94 yards on three attempts while Stewart had a game-high 147 on ten.

 

Stewarts 41-yard run on the opening play of the second half put the mercy rule into effect.

“Braelin showed something in that Grove City game when Hunter went down,” said Dungee. “Now he’s the back that we knew back in August he could be. That run was big for Hunter’s confidence coming off that injury.”

Henwood would go on to throw touchdowns to Matt Cannone, Kam Fisher, and Matt Harris in the second half.

North East gained 192 yards of total offense. Their best chance to score was on their opening drive when they turned it over downs.

“I was happy with the way our kids came out and started the game in the first half,” said North East head coach Shawn Humes. “We just don’t have the depth right now to compete at this level.”

Keyen Skrekla led the Grape Pickers going 9-for-21 passing for 117 and two interceptions. He also rushed for 22 yards on 18 carries.

North East closes its season at 3-8.

“I’m happy with the way our kids came out and competed out there,” said Humes. “They haven’t quit on us all year. Our seniors gave us everything they had. Our program needs to keep moving forward, and we’ll be okay.”

Hickory now moves onto the semifinals where they’ll rematch Grove City. The Hornets won the regular-season matchup on September 27th, 21-19.

“That game is going to be another tough one just like the first time,” said Dungee. “Coach Mowrey does a great job with them, but I think we’ll be ready.”
