The Hickory Hornets came out firing and rolled to a 42-7 win over Corry. The Hornets will advance to the District 10 AAA title game next weekend.

The game started with Corry deferring their choice to the second half allowing Hickory to get the ball first. The Hornets marched right down the field on an 8 play 68 yard drive ending in a 1 yard touchdown run for big Sarmad Shakoor who game in as a fullback in the goal line formation and was rewarded with the touchdown.

Corry came right back driving the 67 yards to the Hickory 5 but the defense of the Hornets did not break and held the Beavers on 4 straight plays and caused a turnover on downs.

Hickory showed a continued commitment to run the ball in this one as they took the ball from their own 4 yard line and 13 plays and 86 yards later they finally uncorked a pass play to go the final 10 yards of the drive. The touchdown pass from Zander Telesz to Jadon Phillips but the Hornets up 14-0.

After a Corry 3 and out, Hickory took over at the Corry 36 and needed only 5 rushing plays for Zander Telesz to find the end zone on a quarterback keeper from 5 yards out. This took the score to 21-0 in favor of Hickory.

Another Corry 3 and out, and Hickory would go on a 2 play 65 yard drive to find the end zone again. This time the score came on a 44 yard run from Kelvin Morrison. Morrison’s score took the total to 28-0, which would be the score at the half.

When the next half started the Hornets defense would again impress, this time an interception by Jadon Phillips would give the ball back to Hickory. 5 plays later the hornets were in for another score, this one at the hand of Zander Telesz with a 2 yard touchdown run. After Telesz touchdown the score was 35-0.

After both teams had failed possessions, Corry finally got a drive to go their way. The Beavers drove 86 yards on 8 plays and found the end zone on a 4 yard pass from Nolan Carey to Nick Lesher. This made the score 35-7 at the start of the final quarter.

Hickory answered the Corry touchdown immediately with a 65 yard touchdown pass from Zander Telesz to Jadon Phillips taking the total to 42-7 in favor of Hickory.

That would be the final tally as the Hornets beat the beavers 42-7 and advance in the District 10 AAA playoffs. Hickory will reach the AAA title game and face Sharon next weekend.

When asked about the extra bye week caused by the forfeit win in the last round, Hickory Coach Bill Dungee said “Hats off to my coaching staff, we talk about the process and not the end result so every day is its own day”. He added that the “Its about energy, half the battle sometimes is enthusiasm and energy.”

When asked about the District 10 AAA Championship game next weekend with Sharon, Dungee said “We will have the same routine, obviously a heightened sense of focus. Half my coaching staff has coached there and some of those coaches have coached here. We know everybody and exactly what tendencies are. Its whoever makes the least mistakes next week that will win that game.”
