‘House gets the win at Cupples to advance to the Semi’s

Pittsburgh – Defense carries Westinghouse into the semifinals after beating Farrell 34-6.

For the first time in two decades, the Pittsburgh City League (District 8) will have a school in the semifinals. The last time it happened was Perry Traditional Academy, who lost 20-3 to Hopewell in 2002.

“It’s huge for our kids and our program,” said Westinghouse head coach Donta Green. “We’ve been telling them it’s all about improving and getting better each week. As for our district, I get tired of hearing about how the City League doesn’t play good football or have good coaches or players. We’re here to represent the entire city, not just Westinghouse.”

Westinghouse took control right from the outset, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions to open up a 20-6 halftime lead.

“When playing a team as good as Farrell, it’s important to play as close to mistake-free football as you can,” Green said. “You must start fast, play well in the middle, and finish strong.”

Khalil Taylor scored on touchdown runs of one and two yards in the first quarter as the Bulldogs took a 14-6 lead, driving 45 and 65 yards, respectively. Taylor led all rushers with 106 yards on 15 carries.

Farrell pulled to within 7-6 when quarterback Kabron Smith scored on a 3-yard run. The drive’s big play was a 47-yard pass from Smith to Lamont Samuels.

 

The Steelers played without Kylon Wilson and could only muster 51 yards of offense in the first half.

“We’re not going to make excuses,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “The better team won today; believe me, you might be looking at the double a state champions. I believe they’re that good. Yes, we were missing a couple of guys, and against a team like this, you need everybody, but again we’re not going to make excuses.”

Wilson led the Steelers with 975 yards receiving and ten touchdowns, adding 527 yards on the ground and a team-high 17 rushing touchdowns in ten games. Wilson was serving a two-game suspension for an incident against Sharpsville in the District X final.

The Bulldogs increased their lead in the second quarter when Sincere Smith hauled in a 16-yard touchdown from Keyshawn Morsillo.

Morsillo completed 8-of-14 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while Smith added three receptions for 59 yards.

The Steeler’s best chance to get themselves back in the game occurred in the third quarter when a Samuels punt pinned the Bulldogs at their 1-yard line.

Following a three-and-out, Farrell started at the Bulldogs’ 29-yard line and drove to the 8-yard line facing a 4th-and-2, which turned into a 4th-and-7 following a penalty. Smith’s pass fell incomplete, ending the threat.

“That was huge to come up with that stop,” Green said. “We didn’t play our best game today, but our defense came up big repeatedly again today. We have some things that need to clean up for next week.”

The Bulldogs then went on a 6-play 87-yard drive with Davon Jones’s 44-yard touchdown reception from Morsillo on a 4th-and-2.

 

“I can’t take credit for that call,” Green said. “But that one of the exciting things about our offense is we have a handful of guys that can make plays when they get the ball in their hands. ”

After Farrell turned the ball over on downs, Westinghouse drove 51 yards to put the finishing touches on the contest as Roderick Jeter scored on a 5-yard run.

“We had our chances today; I think we were down inside the twenty three or four times,” Pegues said. “We just couldn’t get it done; it reminded me of 2019 when we played Clairton, only we were on the other side. When you play against a team as well-coached as them, you have to take advantage, and we didn’t get it done.”

The Steelers were limited to ten yards on offense in the second half.

“The key was our line up front,” said Green. “We’ve spent a lot of time ensuring those guys are playing at a high level. They did exactly what we needed them to do today.”

Westinghouse moves onto the semifinals, where they’ll meet WPIAL Champion Steel Valley, a 34-14 winner over Beaver Falls.

“We’re excited about that game,” Green concluded. “I haven’t seen Steel Valley play yet, but I’m excited for my guys and the opportunity to play that game.”

Farrell concludes their season at 10-2, and their senior class finishes their career with a 40-8 record.

“I told the kids after the game that is was a good season, not a great season, but we still finished the year at 10-2,” Pegues concluded. “This senior class goes out with a 40-8 record, which is a great accomplishment. I’m proud of my guys.”
