Hermitage – It’s been a long time coming for Farrell football.

“It feels great to get back and win District 10 after a season off last year,” said Farrell head coach Anthony Pegues. “I’m proud of my kids, coaching staff, the school district, and the program to get us a title.”

Last season Farrell came up short against Wilmington in the District 10 Title Game, falling 19-14 on October 31st. That game had marked the third time that season the Greyhounds had beaten the Steelers.

Since then, nobody has even come close.

Farrell has outscored its nine opponents thus far this season 510-55, including a 54-0 rout of Wilmington back on October 8th.

It’s safe to say the Steelers made good on their vowels to return and capture the District 10 Title that had slipped through their fingers twelve months ago.

It was merely the same song, different verse Friday night at Hickory High School. The Steelers gained 551 yards of offense on only 36 snaps and cruised to a 48-6 win.

“Brandon Phillian does great things with that program over there,” said Pegues. “We thought about this for an entire year. They made our season end early last year. That was our motivation to get back here and win a D10 Title.”

To say Anthony Stallworth “went off” might be a bit of an understatement as the senior tailback rushed for 325 yards and four touchdowns on only ten carries.

“He had a great game, but you have to thank the guys up front,” said Pegues. “The guys at the line scrimmage did their job. On some of those runs, he burst up the middle untouched.”

Stallworth shook off an injury late in the first half.

“Anthony twisted his ankle early,” said Pegues. “It was a bruised ankle if anything. There was no break for ligament damage, from what we could see. He’s tough and wanted to come back into the game. We thought we’d give him a couple more carries, and he broke off another couple of long runs.”

The Steelers took advantage of excellent field position on the first two drives starting both in Greyhounds territory thanks to their defense forcing back-to-back three and outs.

Sophomore quarterback Kabron Smith opened the scoring with a 16-yard run. Stallworth later broke loose for a 30-yard run.

Wilmington was able to get on the board early in the second quarter when a mishandled punt Farrell resulted in the Greyhounds recovering at the Steelers 2-yard line.

Quarterback Tuff McConahy scored on a 1-yard run. Wilmington pulled to within 14-6, 59 seconds into the second quarter.

“To win seven games and appear in the District 10 Championship marks a successful season,” said Wilmington head coach Brandon Phillian. “If you look at our season, we have two losses to this great Farrell team. Our other came over three hours away to a state-ranked team in Ohio in a much bigger class than us. When we reflect on this season, we’ll see that we have a lot to be proud of.”

That would be all the closer the “Hounds would get as added two more touchdowns before halftime to take a 28-6 lead.

“We had a lot of injuries, penalties, and at times looked sloppy,” said Pegues. “But of our defensive staff did an outstanding job, and they carried us tonight.”

Kylon Wilson made an acrobatic catch, then outraced the defense on his way 91-yard touchdown pass from Smith.

With under a minute to go before halftime, Stallworth scored from 45 yards out.

In the third quarter, two monster runs touchdown runs by Stallworth enacted the PIAA’s mercy clock as Farrell led 42-6 after three quarters.

The first run by Stallworth covered 82 yards, while his second went for 97. Those were his only two carries of the third stanza.

Smith would score his second touchdown of the night from 32 yards out in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Aside from Stallworth, other Steelers added big games as well. Smith rushed for 52 yards on three carries, with two scores while completing 2-of-4 passes for 90 yards and his third total touchdown of the game. Jackson rushed twice for 52 yards.

Wilmington, which gained only 39 yards of offense in the game, was led by Gage Decaprio, who rushed for 28 yards on ten carries. Luke Edwards added 25 yards on 12 attempts.

The Greyhounds concluded another great season at 7-3, with their three losses (two to Farrell) being by teams that have a combined record of 17-3.

“This senior group has accomplished a lot in their four years here,” Phillian concluded. “They made two trips to Hershey, which was special to be able to accomplish. This season we were able to win seven games and return to the District 10 final, which speeches volumes about what this group has accomplished.”
