McDowell overcame a renewed aggressiveness by the visiting Golden Tornado, as they narrowed the score to 24-21, only for McDowell to add two more late touchdowns to win comfortably. Artis Simmons would tally four touchdowns on the ground–from 12, 3, 1, and 5 yards–for McDowell. The first being the lone score of the opening frame. Alex Sontheimer would convert the kick. As well as tacking on a 28 yard field goal in the second.
Butler would get on the board late in the second quarter, while down 17-0, thanks to a 6 yard Mac Schnur touchdown. The extra point was not converted. In the second half, Butler would slice into the lead again with Lance Slater taking a 69 yard pass to the house. Blaze McCandless would catch the two-point play to make it 17-14. McDowell would get the third Artis Simmons touchdown to make it 24-14 heading into the final twelve minutes of the game.
Butler’s Charles Kreinbucher would tally a basket catch in the endzone for a TD for the scrappy Butler squad to get within 3. But that’s as close as they’d make it. After the final Artis Simmons TD, McDowell’s Trey Goodwine would pick off a Butler pass and return it 30 yards for the TD. Finally sealing the victory for the home side, 38-21.
