Slippery Rock scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes and ran past Grove City 34-7 Friday night at Troy Allan Stadium.
“Our kids played hard, and let’s be honest, that was a physical football game from go,” said Slippery Rock head coach Larry Wendereusz. “The nice part us was that they turned the ball over in key spots. Grove City will not do that very often.”
The Rockets took the opening kickoff and drove 66 yards in eight plays.
Facing a 4th-and-7, William Mokel connected with Brendan Earl on a 37-yard touchdown pass, putting the first points on the scoreboard.
Grove City fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and three plays later, Shane Thompson scored on a 16-yard run.
“Tonight, we were able to take advantage of those mistakes,” said Wendereusz. That sequence was huge because they’ve scored on every opening drive this season expcet for tonight. For us to score and recover that ball and score again was huge to put them in a 14-0 hole because that is hard to climb out of.”

The Rockets drove 39 yards after another Eagles fumble only to see Nick Kingerski’s 27-yard field goal attempt blocked.
Slippery Rock did extend their lead to 21-0 early in the second quarter on John Sabo’s 21-yard reception from Mokel.
The Eagles had a chance to crack the scoreboard late in the first half following Zach Rodgers’s 36-yard punt return.
However, seven plays later, Hunter Hohman’s fourth-down pass to Rodgers came up a yard short of the first down.
“This was an interesting game,” said Grove City head coach Sam Mowrey. “We could not get the break we needed. We just could not get out of our own way tonight. We knew it was going to be a battle. You need to play a great football game. The facts were tonight, we didn’t coach a good game or play a good game. My hats off to Slippery Rock. They played a great game and did a great job.”
The Rockets then went up 27-0 on their second half’s opening possession on Mokel’s 2-yard pass to Earl, capping a 78-yard drive.
William Mokel completed 16-of-26 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Earl had three catches for 86 and two touchdowns, while Sabo added four grabs for 59 yards and a score.

The Eagles then recovered the onside kick. However, three plays later, Hohman was intercepted by Ryan Montgomery, ending the third stanza.
Mokel and Slippery Rock put the finishing touches on a superb performance with a 2-yard run with 3:48 to play to close the scoring.
Along with his 215 yards passing, Mokel added 15 yards rushing with five total touchdowns. Montgomery chipped in with 54 yards, while Brett Galcik added 38 on the ground.
Slippery Rock improves to 3-0 on the season and will host Corry next week on homecoming.
“I said to our guys in the huddle, it’s great to 3-0, but we’re 1-0 in section play,” said Wendereusz. “We have got to keep going and having to continue to get better.”
Curtis Hovis led the Eagles with 71 yards rushing on 23 carries. Hohman was 14-of-24 passing for 149 yards with an interception. Zach Rodgers had five catches for 58 yards, Anthony Pereira added four grabs for 42 yards.
“They were able to capitalize on short fields, and turnovers, those are the things that decide games,” Mowrey concluded. “This was a rough one, but these are the kind of moments that define your team. Now we will see how we respond to adversity. The bottom line is we lost one football game. We did a great game, and now it’s about how we respond next week.”
Grove City will try and rebound next week when they host unbeaten Fairview.
