Zack Turben’s 37 yard field goal off the cross bar with 14 seconds left powers Corry past Fort LeBoeuf in District 10 3A Quarterfinal.
The crisp excitement of Playoff football was in the air at War Memorial Stadium in Warren tonight as The Corry Beavers took on the Fort LeBoeuf Bison. The Beavers seeking revenge for the week 4 loss to Fort LeBoeuf 19-13.
After both teams punted away their first possessions, It was Corry making the first big play recovering a fumble at the 35 yard line. The turnover lead to points for the Beavers as 12 plays later Nolan Carey hit Blake Cook on an 11 yard touchdown pass. Corry would fail to add an extra point and would take a 6-0 lead.
The Beavers would force a Bison 3 and out and drive the length of the field again in 17 plays only to turn it over on downs at the 25 yard line.
Fort LeBoeuf could do nothing more and the score at the half was still 6-0 in favor of Corry.
The second half saw a lot of adjustments from a well coached Bison team as they forced a quick 3 and out from the Corry offense and proceeded to drive 73 yard in 10 plays. The drive was capped off by a 1 yard touchdown run by Damian Blose, but Fort LeBoeuf was unable to get the extra point, this would tie the game at 6 a piece.
Corry answered the score with a great kick return for 45 yards and starting their drive at the Bison 30 but the drive stalled with 3 straight incompletions into the end zone and a turn over on downs.
Fort LeBoeuf’s offense put together an 8 play drive but ended up punting the ball to the Corry 46 with 2:23 to play.
The Corry drive seemed to be stalling right away but a 4th and 8 pass interference call on Fort LeBoeuf cost them the momentum and put Corry’s offense at the 33 yard line with just under a minute to play. The Beavers worked the ball down to the 20 but then after a rush for no yards and 2 incompletions, the Beavers turned to Senior Zack Turben to try a 37 yard field goal with 20 seconds on the clock in the tie game.
What would happen next, would make the finish of this one an instant classic, as the go ahead field goal attempt bounced off the cross bar and carried through to give the Beavers a 9-6 lead with 14 seconds remaining.
The ensuing kickoff would be a short kick but that would not stop the Bison from trying everything they could. 7 laterals later, a holding penalty, and a 37 yard return used the remainder of the clock and the game came to an end.
Corry advances to the District 10 Class AAA semi finals where they will face 2 seed Hickory.
“It felt pretty good, I mean, I didn’t know if it had the distance. And I mean as you guys can see it just barely got the distance.” said Corry Senior Zack Turben when asked how the kick felt.
Turben added “It feels great, this is the first time we have been region champs, this is a great feeling for Corry”
