Blue Mountain Eagles Head Coach Tom Gallagher gives a victory speech after his team took care of business 35 to 0 in the season opener vs Jim Thorpe last night at Rotary Field, in Schuylkill Haven.

Last night’s game was held in Schuylkill Haven at the Hurricanes home turf, Rotary Field due to the new turf installment not completed yet at the Eagles Nest at Blue Mountain High School. First of all, the Blue Mountain and Jim Thorpe staff, coaches and players, as well as myself want to thank the Schuylkill Haven School District for allowing this game to be played on their home field. Now… ON TO THE GAME !

Jim Thorpe as the away team in this game would make the call on the coin toss but the Eagles would win the toss, they would defer to the second half, giving the ball to the Olympians to begin the game. Blue Mountain would show their defensive strength early, forcing the Olympians to go 3 and out. The Eagles, like Jim Thorpe would suffer a setback of their own when RB-Payton Fasnacht, who had a rough go of it to start the game, would fumble on the play and the Olympians would recover at their own 45. Two plays later however, QB-Cole Lazorick would be intercepted by the Eagles Tyler Stahley and would be returned to the Eagles 24. The Eagles would seem to start to settle in offensively on the drive running off 7 plays, finished off with a 1 yard plunge up the middle by QB-Tyler Miller. The point after attempt was blocked. The first quarter would end following a sack by Eagles LB-Reese Miller, brother of Tyler Miller with the score 6 to 0.

To begin the second quarter, Jim Thorpe’s pass from Lazorick to Josh Louk went incomplete and the Eagles would take over on downs at their own 16. The Eagles would next drive would only for about 30 yards and would be forced to punt. A short punt game the Olympians decent position at their 46. One play, 2 sacks and fumble later, the Eagles would have the ball once again however, the Eagles would once again turn the ball over on downs at the Jim Thorpe 20 with 7:07 still remaining in the half. Jim Thorpe just couldn’t seem to get things going and then everything went silent for awhile when senior RB-Salvatore Capria, who had amassed 35 yards on just 3 carries thus far in the game, would go down with an apparent knee injury and would not return for the rest of the game. After the game, Head Coach Rosenberger mentioned that the injury did not look good. An update will surely be followed as soon as possible. On the drive, QB-Lazorick would again be intercepted, this time by ATHLETE-Tyler Miller at the 9 yard line, ending one of the best drives of the night by the Olympians. From here on out, it was the Eagles that would take over and dominate the rest of the game.

Five plays, and a strike from Miller to ATHLETE-Will Jacobson for 77 yards and a touchdown, plus a 2-point conversion, and we had ourselves a 14 to 0 ballgame with 3:22 left to go in the first half. The Eagles defense wasted no time, pressuring the Olympians into having to punt again after just 3 plays. Blue Mountain would have the ball at their 39. Three plays was all it took as Tyler Miller would connect with another Tyler, Tyler Stahley for 56 yards and the score to put the Eagles up 21 to 0 with 1:02 to go till halftime. 21 to 0 would eventually be the score at the half.

Blue Mountain would get the second half kickoff and punch it right down the middle on 6 straight run plays, all ran by Senior RB-Payton Fasnacht, finishing it off with a 10 yards scamp to the end-zone, adding to the Eagles lead now 28 to 0 with 8:40 to go in the 3rd quarter. Jim Thorpe would get the ball at the 44 following a decent kick return but just 5 plays later, would turn the ball over on downs at the Eagles 36. Blue Mountain would run just over 4 minutes off the clock on the drive by handing the ball off to Fasnacht and Will Jacobson taking off at the QB position now. Eagles scored on the drive with 3:04 still left in the quarter when Jacobson would call his own number and bust through for the score and a 35 to 0 lead over the Olympians.

Jim Thorpe would end the third quarter with a punt following another Eagles sack on Olympians QB-Lazorick, this time sacked by Junior LB-Lukas Kauffman. The Eagles would sack the Jim Thorpe quarterback 5 times on the night. The big offensive numbers on the night for the Olympians would come from Junior WR-Justin Yescavage, catching 4 passes for 44 yards. In the fourth quarter, Blue Mountain would basically just try to run the clock out, now that we were in Mercy Clock rules. Jim Thorpe would get one last chance to get something done offensively but time would just run out and the game would end with the score, Blue Mountain-35, Jim Thorpe-0 !
