Star NFL running back Saquon Barkley agreed to terms with the Philadelphia Eagles and lands a 3 year 37.7 million dollar contract. Barkley, having played in PA for both high school at Whitehall and college at Penn State University, is already a fan favorite in the State. With the news breaking that the Eagles let former running back Deandre Swift walk in free agency, Eagles fans were begging Howie Roseman to make a splash deal which he arguably got the best running back in this free agency class.
Barkley was arguably the biggest story of this years free agency as there was rumors of him going to teams like the Texas, and even the Cowboys. However Howie Roseman, the Eagles General Manager, does his magic and lands the superstar running back. This raises many questions as it’s not like the Eagles to spend that much money on a running back, especially with their defense having many holes that have yet to be filled. However just as Roseman and Eagles fans see it, Saquon is a very special talent, a true generational player. Barkley’s former team, the New York Giants, struggled to keep the same 5 offensive linemen on the field due to injuries or just straight up lack of talent. Saquon in a below average offense still managed to amass over 1,200 scrimmage yards while also missing a few games due to an injury. He really was the life of that offense and now with top 3 rushing offensive line, the sky’s the limit on what he’ll be able to do this next upcoming season.
Barkley will get his chance of ‘revenge’ as he will get the chance to play his former team twice as the Eagles and Giants are division rivals. He joins very few NFL stars to join a rival team in free agency along with being arguably being the biggest story in this years free agency class. The poetic thing about this whole thing is that I believe Saquon usually has his best games against the Eagles especially early on in his career. With this being his hometown it’s all too fitting that he comes back to the state that it all started for him. After the Eagles collapse towards the end of the season last year the addition of Saquon Barkley will hopefully get them back on track and the running back can once again be the “home state hero” here in Philadelphia.
