Hollywood’s Cutting Room Floor-Colonial League Week 1

@BPtashinski on Twitter

As the 2021 high school football season kicked off this past Friday in the PIAA District XI the biggest news was the merging of the Colonial and Schuylkill Leagues in the off season. Teams that have never or rarely competed against each other will now have that opportunity to meet on the gridiron. We should also see in the first few weeks in the power rankings the cream rise to the top in qualifying for district playoff berths. For those that need a refresher or if you are seeing this for the first time here is how league is setup: 4 divisions Red, White, Blue and Gold.

Red: Notre Dame Green Pond, North Schuylkill, Northern Lehigh, Palisades, Salisbury Twp, Pen Argyl, Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua.

White: Palmerton, Schuylkill Haven, Catasauqua, Pine Grove, Minersville and Mahanoy Area.

Blue: Tri-Valley, Williams Valley, Panther Valley, Nativity BVM, Shenandoah Valley and Marian Catholic.

Gold: Blue Mountain, Northwestern Lehigh, Wilson Area, Pottsville, Southern Lehigh, Saucon Valley and Lehighton.

Here are the scores from the weekend featuring teams from the  Colonial League:
Palmerton 46 Lehighton 13
Bangor 35 Palisades 0
Northern Lehigh 40 Muncy 21
Northwestern Lehigh 42 Tamaqua 13
Notre Dame GP 47 Saucon Valley 20
Wilson Area 47 Pen Argyl 14
Catasauqua 6 Salisbury Twp 0

I would be remiss if I did not mention one team had to postpone a game due to a Covid situation, and that would be Panther Valley, who was scheduled to face Northern Lehigh, but the Bulldogs were able to schedule Muncy out of District 4 and came out victorious.

Quarterback play seem to rule the weekend as these players had spectacular statistical efforts

QB Justin Holmes, Northwestern Lehigh was 7 for 10 passing for 140 yards one touchdown, he also rushed for two scores and picked up 52 yards on the ground in a 42-13 win over Tamaqua.

QB Colin Quintano, Notre Dame GP, amassed 4 scores through the air and rushed for another, throwing for over 300 yards on 21 of 26 passes.

QB Matt Machalik, Palmerton, may have the game of the night in a 46-13 win over Lehighton, rushing for over 120 yards on 20 carries 3 touchdowns also completing 15 of 22 passes for 220 yards and a score, oh yeah he had a pick six as well for 51 yards.

QB Dylan Smoyer Northern Lehigh, was 7 for 12 and 145 yards with 3 scores against Muncy

We didn’t forget the running backs/receivers:

RB Matt Frame of Northern Lehigh scored twice and picked up almost 170 yards on just 11 carries in 40-21 win at Muncy

WR Damian Tyminski, Pen Argyl, hauled in 5 passes for 155 yards and 2 touchdown in 47-14 loss to Wilson.

This week’s games will start on Thursday September 2nd:

Bangor at Pottstown 7pm
Northwestern Lehigh at Northern Lehigh 7pm

Friday September 3rd

Wilson Area at Palisades 7pm
Palmerton at Jim Thorpe 7pm
Southern Lehigh at Notre Dame GP
Salisbury Twp at Saucon Valley 7pm

Saturday September 4th

Catasauqua at Pen Argyl 1:30pm

We will be monitoring the remnants of Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ida as it enters Pennsylvania Wednesday and Thursday and if any games are in jeopardy. I plan to be at the Bangor at Pottstown game Thursday night.

Stay safe everyone and hopefully it won’t be as bad as what they are saying.
