The Minersville Battlin’ Miners squeaked out a win against the Schuylkill Haven Hurricanes.

Multiple Miners contributed in scoring as this game came down to the wire.

Schuylkill Haven was set to receive the opening kickoff as Week 9 action was ready to ensue.

Connor Goehring of the Hurricanes ran the kickoff 77 yards and put his team close to the touchdown territory. Aiden Myers then rushed the ball in for the score. Minersville responded without panic, with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Dante Carr to Logan Hutsko. The Hurricanes included some passing action as well with a 17-yard pass to Goehring. Minersville’s Luke Stevenosky punched the ball in toward the end of the quarter. The score at the end of the first was 14-12, Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes started the second quarter with Chase Williams and Tayshaun Smith bringing down Carr. Adam Malinoski recovered the loose ball. Myers then ran 14 yards for the score. Minersville did score two touchdowns before heading to the locker room, a 26-yard pass to Hutsko and a forward pass from Lorenzo Yourey to Raymond Synder Jr. Yourey then finished off the scoring drive with the two-point conversion.

The second half continued back-and-forth scoring from both teams. Stevenosky and Brock Polinsky worked together to complete another strong scoring drive. As soon as the Miners regained possession Carr aired out a pass to Yourey for a 78-yard catch and run. It was then Haven’s turn to get to scoring. Myers broke free and had a 35-yard touchdown. Niko Carestia then recovered a fumble by the Miners to give the possession right back to the Hurricanes. Goehring then ran 44 yards for the touchdown.

Haven’s Carestia kept up the intensity with a powerful 10-yard touchdown run, but the Miners finished off the game with a 14-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone. The Hurricanes had the possession to finish the game but were unable to find an opening. The final score of the contest was 47-39, Miners.

Coach Justin Frantz and his Battlin’ Miners will take on Nativity as the away team. Coach Mike Farr and his Hurricanes will take on Blue Mountain in the Backyard Brawl as the away team. Tune into both games as we enter the last week of regular season play.
