Emmaus – In what was billed as a clash of supposed East Penn Conference frontrunners, there was little doubt left by the conclusion of this Friday night matchup which squad is deserving of that title. This was a evening where the Blue Eagles dictated gameplay from opening kickoff to final whistle. Nazareth came out of the gate firing on all cylinders.  After a stop by the Nazareth defense, the Blue Eagles marched down the field and topped it off with a 32 yard touchdown rush by Marquez Wimberly with 8:20 left in the first quarter.

The following possession for the Hornets was more of the same with Josiah Williams and the Emmaus offense struggling to get much of any offensive gains against a staunch Nazareth defense.  Following their 3 and out, the Hornets luck turned around.  The Emmaus defense recovered a Blue Eagle fumble which set them up with a short field in enemy territory.  A few plays later Williams bounced a QB run to the outside and struck pay-dirt and tied the game at 7.

The Blue Eagle offense took the field after the ensuing kickoff and left no doubt the rest of the way.  Peyton Falzone hit his wide receiver Caleb Newsome in stride for a quick 63 yard strike to put Nazareth back on top 14-7 with 1:18 left in the 1st quarter.

The second quarter brought much of the same, with Nazareth’s defense stonewalling the Hornets offense’s every move.  With 8:48 left in the half, Blue Eagle Quarterback Peyton Falzone found Mason Kuehner in the front corner of the end-zone with a 10 yard pass to stretch the Blue Eagle lead to 14.

That would conclude the scoring for the first half at Emmaus with the Nazareth Blue Eagles taking a 21-7 lead to the locker room over the hosting Hornets.  The 2nd half kick-off was received by Nazareth and after a defensive stop by Emmaus and another by the Blue Eagle defense, Nazareth running back Jed Bendekovits found the endzone with a 1 yard plunge up the middle to increase the Nazareth lead to 28-7 with just over 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

The next chance the Nazareth offense had with the ball, they went right back to Jed Bendekovits who found the end-zone for a second time on the night and stretching the Nazareth lead to 35-7 with 5:48 left to play in the 3rd quater.

The following drive would see the Hornets’ offense get some momentum going.  They rumbled down in to Nazareth territory only to have any hopes of a comeback dashed by Blue Eagle defender Mason Kuehner who picked off a Josiah Williams pass and took it the distance for a pick-six.  This put the Blue Eagles up 42-7 with 1:09 left in the 3rd quarter and spelled the end of the night for many of the Blue Eagle starters on either side of the ball.

The final stanza quickly rolled by and Nazareth left Emmaus with a convincing victory by a score of 42-7.

Next week, Emmaus (1-1) travels to J. Birney Crumb Stadium on Friday for a matchup against the  undefeated Vikings of Allentown Central Catholic who are fresh off a 37-20 week 2 victory over the Red Rovers of Easton.  Nazareth (2-0) will welcome Bethlehem Freedom (1-1) who dropped their week 2 matchup with Parkland by a score of 35-0 to Andrew S. Leh Stadium next Friday for a chance to go (3-0) on the young season.
