North Schuylkill victorious in shootout with Northern Lehigh Friday night 56 to 42 !

It was a beautiful, cool evening at Gosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium Friday night to watch what we all thought was going to be a great football game between two very talented football teams, we were not disappointed to say the least. This game produced 98 points in total, 56 of those were scored by the Spartans of North Schuylkill. To begin the game, Northern Lehigh would receive the opening kickoff and immediately would show what type of game we would be getting when on the first play of the Bulldog drive, they were run somewhat of a trick play that would go for 74 yards and the score when Bulldogs QB Dylan Smoyer would complete a backwards pass to the RB, and he would then throw the ball downfield to WR-Trevor Amorim who would do the rest and take it to the endzone to put Northern Lehigh up 7 to 0 with 11:42 to play in the opening quarter of play. North Schuylkill would respond with a score of their own after marching down the field on a series of runs, capped off by big boy Robbie Weitz, when he would get the handoff and plunge into the endzone from a yard out to tie the game at 7. The Spartans would hold the Bulldogs on their next drive and Northern Lehigh would have to punt away. North Schuylkill’s QB-Jake Hall would connect with Joey Flail on their next series for 36 yards and the score to put the Spartans on top 14 to 7, following the extra point made by Gavin Mentzer. Mentzer would go 8 for 8 on extra points for the game.

North Schuylkill would lead 14 to 7 going into the second quarter. Spartans would have the ball to begin the quarter and not long after, Jake Hall would again connect with Flail for a long gain down to the Bulldog 1 yard line setting up another touchdown run by #79-Robbie Weitz from 1 yard out to extend the Spartans lead to 21 to 7. Northern Lehigh wouldn’t let up, and shortly after, Dylan Smoyer would hit Trevor Amorim again for long touchdown, this one for 72 yards, closing the gap to 21 to 14 in the second quarter. Like most of the 2021 season thus far, the Spartans wouldn’t waste any time putting points on the board when another connection by Hall to Flail would make the score 28 to 14 when they would connect for 37 yards. The Bulldogs would answer when Amorim would run one in from 60 yards, once again, closing the gap, trailing 28 to 21. On the Spartans ensuing drive, Robbie Weitz, would record his 3rd touchdown of the game, still in the first half, when he would take the handoff 8 yards to the endzone to put North Schuylkill back on top by 14, 35 to 21. Not to be outdone, Northern Lehigh would put together a drive that ended with Izaiah Ramos taking the handoff to the endzone from 3 yards out to make the score 35 to 28 just before the half. North Schuylkill almost did score to end the first half when RB-Josh Chowansky would take the ball, and run to the Bulldogs 3 yard line before being tackled to end the half.

In the third quarter, the pace slowed just a little until North Schuylkill would add to their lead when Jaxson Chowansky would take the ball 9 yards and score, putting the Spartans back up by 14, 42 to 28. Later in the quarter, the Bulldogs Smoyer would connect for 8 yards with WR-Brett Misera to again, close the gap to 7, trailing 42 to 35. That would be the only 2 scores in the quarter as we would move to the final quarter of play with North Schuylkill in possession of the ball. Spartans would score on the next play when Robbie Weitz would score his 4th and final touchdown of the game when he would rumble in from 2 yards out to put the Spartans up 49 to 35. Northern Lehigh would begin their next drive, and like most of the game, it was Smoyer to Amorim again for a long pass play but the drive would eventually stall out, and the Bulldogs would turn the ball over on downs, and the Spartans would take over at their own 25. Shortly after, Jake Hall would connect with Flail once again, this one for 49 yards and the score, giving Joey his third touchdown reception of the game and extended the lead to 56 to 35 in the fourth. Bulldogs Dylan Smoyer wouldn’t be done just yet when he would connect with Matt Frame in the endzone from 5 yards out to get the Bulldogs back to within 14, trailing 56 to 42 late in the final quarter. North Schuylkill would get the ball back with some time still left on the clock and would choose to run the ball, run some time off, turning the ball over on downs. Northern Lehigh managed to get past mid-field but there would be not enough time left to score so the Bulldogs would let the time run down to end the game with the score 56 to 42 Spartans. With the North Schuylkill win, it sets up an epic match-up, a rematch of last years District XI Championship participants in Notre Dame Green Pond(5-0) and North Schuylkill(6-0). Both teams were undefeated going into their game in 2020, and the same will be said in this years game. Notre Dame Green Pond did not play this past weekend due to COVID issues, so we are still not sure this game will happen but we will remain hopeful and optimistic. What is better than two high powered, talented offenses battling it out on the field of play !!
