TAMAQUA- All eyes were on the radar loop Monday night at Tamaqua Area Blue Raider Stadium. Heavy rains, winds and lightning was expected to hit the area around eight o’clock as Northern Lehigh and Tamaqua met on the gridiron, but no one thought it would be as devastating as it turned out to be. The Bulldogs scored three times in the first half to get the victory 21-0 before a decent crowd for a week night, as this game was postponed from Friday night due to Covid issues.

Tamaqua’s Warren Stewart took the opening kickoff at his own five yard line and returned it to the Bulldog 45. The Raiders pushed the ball inside the 20, when quarterback Nathan Gregoire hit his WR Zander Coleman in the flat around the ten yard line and as Coleman got near the end zone, the ball was fumbled and went out of the end zone for a touchback.

Northern Lehigh then went on a ten play drive to move inside the red zone themselves a illegal block in the back pushed them back to the 28 yard line from there quarterback Dylan Smoyer hooked up with Nick Frame for a 28 yard score with 3:31 left in the first quarter. Brett Misera made the point after to make it 7-0.

Both teams continued to move the ball against one another, but only Northern Lehigh could cash it for scores in the second quarter. The Bulldogs took possession after a Raider punt on their own 35. Moving the ball consistantly down field, converting a couple of crucial third downs in the process. Dylan Smoyer called his own number from the Tamaqua nine and dove into the end zone with 1:31 left till half and a 14-0 lead with Misera’s PAT.

On Tamaqua’s next drive Gregoire found a huge opening in the middle of the Bulldog line as he got to the second level the ball slipped out of his hands, Misera scooped it up for Northern Lehigh and took it past midfield, where he was taken out of bounds, but a late hit on Tamaqua put the ball at the thirty-four with less than a minute left to go till half. With nine seconds left Smoyer again found Frame for the score and 21-0 lead at half.

As the 96th edition of the Blue Raider band took the field at halftime, lightning struck in the distance. The Officials decided to announce a weather delay with about 3 minutes before the second half kickoff. As the stadium cleared the rain and wind hit with such ferocity that caused the stadium lights to go out and debris was strewn across the field. A utility pole just outside the west entrance to the stadium came crashing down along with power lines on Stadium Drive, it was decided wisely that the game be called a final at that point for the safety of all.

Northern Lehigh improved their record to 2-1 and will have a home game Friday night with undefeated
Notre Dame Green Pond(3-0) a 48-0 winner over Salisbury Twp. Tamaqua(0-3) will be at (0-3) Pwn Argyl Saturday afternoon.
