BETHLEHEM- What seems like top to bottom one of the most competitive conferences in the Commonwealth– The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South remains unclear to whom is the front-runner for the title. Nazareth, Emmaus and Bethlehem Catholic are the only teams without a blemish on their record, but as Friday evening started Parkland, Freedom and Allentown Central Catholic trailed by a game.

When the final horn sounded at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium, the Trojans handed Freedom their second loss by a count of 21-13 before a large crowd of spectators.

Freedom(1-2) took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards using thirteen plays and opened the scoring when quarterback Ethan Neidig dove in from two yards out to make it 7-0 with 6:15 left after Zeyad Ragab converted the PAT.

Parkland answered right back on thier opening possession, on equally impressive 12 play 75 yard drive using up over five minutes to even the score at seven, when on 4th-and two from the Patriot 21, running back Trey Tremba, broke several tackles on his way to paydirt with under a minute left in the quarter. Gryffin Mitstifer connected on the PAT.

Neither team could muster any offense and the half ended with score tied at 7.

The second half exploded on the first play after Parkland started the first drive on their own 29. Quarterback Luke Spang connected with Nakhi Bullock out in the flat, and Bullock dashed down the visitors sidelines for a 71 yard score making it 14-7 with just eleven ticks off the clock, again Mitstifer with PAT.

Freedom only had the ball once in the third quarter and went three-and-out and was forced to punt with Parkland taking over at it’s 32.

The Trojans pushed the lead to fourteen on the first play of the final period as Spang capped off a nearly 20 play 68 yard drive. Converting five third down plays along the game clinching drive, Spang took it in from five yards out making it 21-7.

Freedom(1-2) would try to mount a comeback as Jalen Fletcher would score with just over four minutes left on a four yard run, the key play being a third-and-fourteen play that picked up 31 yards on the drive. The score made it 21-13 as they missed the PAT.

The Trojans milked the clock using a punishing ground attack that kept the clock moving and converting first downs as the got in the red zone with 1:30 left and took a couple of knees to seal the deal

Parkland will now face Allentown Central Catholic next week in Orefield. The Vikings are hosting winless Easton Red Rovers Saturday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium. The Patriots, who also started last season 2-2 before getting on a roll to capture a district championship will try to right the ship but have unbeaten Nazareth coming to BASD next Saturday night. The Blue Eagles gave Bethlehem Catholic their first loss Friday 21-6.

Here is what quarterback Luke Spang said after the game:

Parkland’s coach Tim Moncman was happy with his team’s second half performance but knows there is still a lot of football left to be played.
