Opening week started off with a light show, and a few bangs around the Schuylkill League as mother nature made sure she was seen, felt and heard. Thunder and Lightning rolled through the area just as teams began to roll out to their respected games. Many games were delayed due to lightning shows nearby, and some were postponed to Saturday and Sunday. One other game was canceled due a COVID issue.

To start things off, I’d like to recap the games I attended on Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday evening. First, was at The Silver Bowl at Mt. Carmel which saw the home team Red Tornadoes host the Spartans of North Schuylkill.
North Schuylkill’s finished the game like they ended the 2020 season, rolling along full steam as senior quarterback Jake Hall threw for 168 yards on 7 completions and finished with 4 touchdowns(3 passing, 1 rushing), Senior running back Josh Chowansky ran for 254 yards, 1 touchdown(59 yards), while Junior Terry Thomas ran for 50. Brown(80 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Flail(75 yards and 1 touchdown) lead the way for the receiving core. Jack Dean lead the way on defense totaling 12 tackles(9 solo), and Neekoli Carabello recorded 2 sacks.

Next, was the game at the Eagles Nest, with Jim Thorpe playing at Blue Mountain.
Jim Thorpe quarterback Brett Balliet threw for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Blue Mountain quarterback Will Jacobson threw for 81 yards and 1 touchdown, while rushing for 59 yards. Blue Mountain’s Ian Donahue recorded 2 sacks along the way for the defense.

And finally, the third game I attended in week-1 was Schuylkill Haven at Marian Catholic’s Stan Dakosty Field to take on the Colts.
Schuylkill Haven Junior running back Connor Goehring lead the way with 151 yards, and 1 touchdown, and Sophomore Aidan Myers, followed behind with 70 yards and a touchdown. Haven’s defense produced as well with the Hurricanes recording 6 sacks, 2 by both Josh Jenan, and Casey Chamberlain.
Marian Catholic’s BIG man on the field was Matt Martin who ran the ball 21 times for 120 yards and a touchdown.

Other big game stats from around the league went as follows:
Tri Valley racked up 476 yards on offense, leading the way was Cam Wetzel, with 224 total yards(182 rushing, 42 receiving) and 3 total touchdowns(2 rushing, 1 receiving), and Jake Scheib, 108 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns.

Nativity BVM’s put down 441 yards of total offense with quarterback Cody Miller leading the way, Cody finished with 328 yards in total(185 passing, and 143 rushing) and 3 total touchdowns(2 passing, 1 rushing)

Shenandoah Valley’s quarterback Owen Kosar lead the way with 227 yards passing on 12 completions, and 2 touchdowns, 1 to Nick Ryan and the other to Joey Vevasis, Ryan finished the evening off with 130 receiving yards on just 3 receptions, and Vevasis with 10 catches for 97 yards.
