BETHLEHEM-  In the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference season opener for both Easton and Bethlehem Liberty Saturday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium the lack of competition showed in the first half. Neither team could put points on the board over the first twenty-four minutes.

Easton turned the ball over twice on downs, the first time on a fourth-and-seven from the Liberty 13-yard line in the opening quarter. Again facing a fourth-and-seven from the Liberty 42 their drive was stuffed short of the line to gain in the second quarter.

Liberty did not fare any better as they rushed for -14 yards in the half and had a 54 yard field goal attempt by Sander Sahaydak blocked by the Rover special team.

However, the second half was a different story as Easton, the home team, being their home at Cottingham Stadium is undergoing complete renovations. The Rovers erupted for 30 unanswered points en route to a 30-7 win over the Hurricanes.

Kyle Evancho, started the scoring barrage with a 42 interception return of an errant Byron Haydt pass with 6:41 left in the third quarter, the point after was no good leaving the score at 6-0.

On their next possession, Liberty found themselves going in the wrong direction as the Rover defense swarmed the Hurricanes to a negative 17 yards. A partially blocked punt from inside their own 20 was picked up, on a perfect bounce, by Marcus Williams who sped by the Hurricanes would-be-tacklers for a 42 yard score. The two-point conversion was good making the score 14-0 with 4:01 left in the quarter.

Running back Nahjee Adams then got into the action for Easton as he found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter. Adams finished with 120 yards on 25 carries. His first score came on 14 yard run with 8:12 left to play. He closed out the scoring with two yard run around the end with 3:00 left on the clock.

Liberty avoided being shutout with a 9 yard pass with seven seconds left to play. With quarterback Byron Haydt connecting with Jonathan Ahner in the back of the end zone.

“We didn’t finish drives in the first half and took us some time to get on track, like we did in the second half.” Easton coach Jeff Braido stated. “Scoring on defense and special teams got us started in that second half.” He concluded.

Next Saturday Easton (1-0) will face another challenge from Bethlehem Freedom, a 44-20 winner over Northampton, while Liberty (0-1) will try to get back on track against Bethlehem Catholic, who were shutout by Nazareth 21-0. Both games scheduled at BASD Stadium.
