Williams Valley tops Mahanoy Area

Mahanoy hosted the William’s Valley Vikings Friday night. Mahanoy started off the game with an onside kick recovered by Banda putting the Vikings on their own 48-yard line. Bryce Herb found Williard open who then ran it 36 yards to the end zone putting Vikings up 7-0.

Mahanoy returned the kick to their own 35-yard line. Vikings defense forced a punt which put them on Mahanoy’s 37-yard line. The Vikings made an attempt to get a first down on fourth and 16 but failed which put Mahanoy Area on their own 37. The Vikings held and forced the Bears to punt again.

The Vikings got the ball on their own 35. Herb found Herman downfield for a 13-yard reception. On the next play Herb was picked off by George Budihas. Ben Terry linked up with Aaron Bickowski for a 50-yard reception which put them on the Vikings 14, but the Vikings defense forced Mahanoy to turn it over on downs. Mahanoy forced Vikings Williard to fumble the ball, recovering it on the Vikings 24. Mahanoy fumbled the ball but recovered it which gave them a first down. The first quarter ended with the Vikings leading 7-0.

Mahanoy Area started the second quarter with the ball on the Vikings 7. Terry ran it into the endzone but it got called back due to holding. Mahanoy then got called for a false start the play after which put them on the Vikings 20, but Terry found a gap and ran it to the endzone. With a missed extra point attempt the Vikings still led 7-6.

 

During the next Viking series, Herb handed off the ball to Achenbach who picked up 17 yards. Herb then linked up with Engle downfield for a 30- yard reception. Herb then found Engle again for a 6-yard touchdown pass which put the Vikings up 14-6.

 

Mahanoy responded back when Terry found Manley who ran it in the endzone for an 18-yard touchdown pass. They went for two but were not successful, so the Vikings still led 14-12. Herb linked up with Herman downfield for a 24-yard reception. Both defenses held each other from scoring and the second quarter came to end with the Vikings up 14-12.

Mahanoy started off the third quarter with the ball on their own 39. Terry attempted to throw but got picked off by Herman who took it 50 yards to the endzone which increased the Vikings lead to 21-12.

 

Mahanoy responded a couple plays later when Terry found a big gap taking it 32 yards to the endzone. Terry also ran it in the endzone for a successful two-point conversion which made it 21-20. Herb tehn linked up with Herman yet again for a 37-yard reception. Herb then linked up with Engle for 12-yard touchdown pass which made it 28-20.

After a back and forth battle for the remainder of the third and fourth quarter the game ended with the Vikings winning 28-20. Wolfgang led the Vikings in rushing with 14 carries for 66 yards followed by Herb with 5 carries for 46 yards and Achenbach with 6 carries and 32 yards.

Herman led the Vikings in receiving with 5 receptions for 164 yards followed by Engle with 6 receptions for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns. Herb completed the game with 293 yards passing for 3 touchdowns. For the Vikings defense Jackson Yoder led them with 17 tackles followed by Ezi Hite with 15, and Jesse Engle with 12.

For Mahanoy Area, Terry led the rushing with 17 carries for 110 yards followed by McGroarty with 5 carries for 46 yards. Bickowkski led in receiving with 1 reception for 50 yards.
