On this exact day last year, the Whitehall Zephyrs were playing in the DXI title game against E. Stroudsburg South, eventually falling to the Cavaliers 47 to 41. Zephyrs Head Coach, and former Penn State quarterback, Matt Sennaca said after the game how last years loss was so disappointing, “this year we got to go out there and take care of business.” Take care of business was exactly what they did when on the first play of the game following a touchback on the opening kickoff, Zephyrs’ senior RB-Nigel Linton would take the handoff and run 80 yards for the games first score, leading 7 to 0 with just over 10 seconds ran off the clock.
It wouldn’t take long for the games next score when on the ensuing kickoff, Southern Lehigh would fumble and the Zephyrs would recover, giving them great field possession at the Spartans 11. Two penalties and 4 plays later, we had ourselves a 14 to 0 ballgame after a pass from Trey Dogmanits to Linton would go for 30 yards to the endzone. A ten play 53 yard drive for Southern Lehigh would end in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Christopher Fritts to the big TE-Bryan Tobin, closing the gap to 14 to 7 Zephyrs leading with 5:33 to go in the first quarter still.

On the next drive, Whitehall would go 52 yards in 5 plays, scoring on a 32 yard pass play from Dogmanits to Braden Bashore, Zephyrs now leading 21 to 7 with 3:38 still to go in the opening quarter. Southern Lehigh would get off 8 plays before the quarter would end, eventually scoring in the second when the sophomore QB-Fritts would take it himself for the 1 yard plunge into the endzone, once again trailing by just 7, 21 to 14.

On the ensuing drive for the Zephyrs, Nigel Linton would get the load on carries, going 57 yards on 7 carries, finishing it off with 3 yard touchdown run, his third touchdown of the first half, to put Whitehall up 29 to 14 after a two-point conversion run by Bashore with 6:06 to play in the first half. Both teams would be forced to punt on their next possessions until the Spartans put together a drive that would go for 50 yards, capped off with a 21 yard field-goal, eventually ending the half with a 29 to 17 halftime score.

At halftime, Brian, aka: Hollywood and I got to meet up with Guy Smith, from PFN’S ” Around District 11: The Travels of Guy & Pam” and talk until the second half began… great talking with you Guy !! Southern Lehigh would get the ball to start the second half and run off 14 plays before punting to Whitehall with just over five minutes to go in the quarter. The Zephyrs would get the ball at their 26 following the punt. It would only take 3 minutes until Whitehall would add to their lead, when Braden Bashore would get his second touchdown of the game with a 32 yard touchdown reception with 2:02 to go in the third quarter. A 21 yard field goal for the Spartans would end the quarter with the score Whitehall 36, Southern Lehigh 17.

With 8:59 left to play in the game, a turnover on downs by the Spartans would give Whitehall the ball at their 18 yard line. A big run by Dogmanits for 39 yards would setup the touchdown pass 3 plays later when Dogmanits would connect with junior WR-Jack Kocher for 31 yards and the score, giving the Zephyrs a 43 to 17 lead with 6:18 to play.

With 6:12 to go, Southern Lehigh would have the ball and try to get something going but once again they would turn the ball over on downs at their own 30 with 5:15 now left to play. Senior Jamel Mumford would get the call to finish out the game, running for 24 yards on 6 carries to the Spartans 6 yard line before two kneel downs by Dogmanits would end the game with the score, Whitehall – 43, Southern Lehigh – 17 !
