Titus David wins PL 4A Championship Game MVP

The Braves of John Bartram are the Public League 4A champions. Bartram ended a 45 year drought of not winning a Public League title by holding off Boys Latin Charter winning in dramatic fashion 22-14. This game would ultimately come down to the wire and most in attendance thought it would be determined in overtime until a wild set of events in less than a minute propelled Bartram to a victory and brought a title back to Southwest Philadelphia something that hadn’t happened since 1976.

The game started off with Boys Latin receiving the kickoff and they would hurt themselves with negative plays including the first snap being too high causing star QB/S Seth Cobb to retrieve it and run for his life before taking an 18 yard loss. They also missed a huge big play when Sr. WR Solomon Cobb dropped a would be 30 yard pass maybe even a TD on 3rd and 22 thus causing them to punt the ball. Bartram on their first possession would take over on their own 37 yard line but go 4 and out while their WR had trouble hauling in a couple passes. After trading 2nd possessions, Bartram would get down inside the 5 yard line and was unable to punch it in leaving the score 0-0 for Boys Latin to start their 3rd possession at their own 4 yard line.

The Warriors of BL would then methodically march down field behind QB Seth Cobb’s legs to gain 3 first down and drive down to the Bartram 40 yard line before they were stone walled by the Braves defense. The one thing that hurt Boys Latin the most was errant snaps. BL was in a manageable 2nd and 4 at their own 49 yard line when an errant snap went over the QB head and before they knew it they faced an 3rd and 34 from their own 19 yard line. They would have 2 false start penalties that made it 3rd and 44 from their own 9 yard line with 6:47 left in the 2nd quarter and that’s where Bartram would finally make a dent into the scoring column. Th

ey returned the punt from the BL 39 yard line down to the 25 yard line. Bartram would commit to running the ball along with getting BL to jump off sides and on 2nd and goal they were able to punch it in on the ground for a TD. Their QB would run around the edge to convert the 2 point attempt to give them a 8-0 lead with just under 3 minutes remaining in the first half. On the ensuring BL possession once again a high snap occured this time the QB was unable to gather it before Bartram recovered it deep in BL territory and their QB would score on the edge to provide a 14-0 lead with less than a minute left in the half. BL would promptly respond with a 58 yard completion from Seth to Solomon Cobb (atoning for the earlier drop) to put them in scoring position right before the half with just 30 seconds remaining.

The Braves defense stepped up by pushing the Warriors back from the 5 yard line to the 13 yard line and on 3rd down with no where to throw and no time left Seth Cobb threw up a desperation pass that ended up being intercepted preserving the halftime shutout. Bartram would receive the 2nd half kick off and on it’s first play Sr. Nasir Bolden would rush for 10 yards up the gut of the BL defense. From there the Braves offense would once again stall and Boys Latin would take over inside their own 30 yard line. This would be the possession where the game would get interesting as BL found it’s rhythm offensively and Seth Cobb found Fr. WR Semaj Carmichael for a 22 yard score on 4th and 7. Boys Latin would convert the 2 point conversion on a Seth Cobb run to make the score 14-8 with 6 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Boys Latin would get the ball back and get inside the 15 yard line of Bartram before a interception by Freshman DB AJ David to keep it 14-8 going into the final quarter. The drama unfolded with 3:12 left and Bartram having a 3rd and 15 from Bartram’s own 45 when QB Titus David launched a pass that was intercepted by Seth Cobb and returned to the Bartram 45 yard line setting the Warriors up for one final gasp at tying/winning the game.

To add suspense there was a penalty on the return and Boys Latin was awarded an extra 15 yards to set the Warriors up at the Braves 30 yard line with 2:57 left and 2 timeouts. The Warriors would go back to the ground to try and punch it in the endzone and on 3rd and goal they had a perfectly designed play but was dropped by the WR however Bartram was hit with a personal foul for roughing the passer setting BL up with a 1st and goal at the 4 yard line.

After 3 plays BL finally punched it in from the 2 yard line to tie it up with 1:09 left. BL would once again fail to convert the 2 point conversion on a designed Seth Cobb roll out run. Bartram would receive the kickoff and get to their own 39 yard line with only 1:04 remaining and 0 time outs. That drive started out rough with a delay of game to make it 1st and 15 at their own 34 yard line. On 1st and 15 the QB found his receiver for a 20 yard completion.

On the next play he once again rolls around the pocket finds an open target in Nasir Bolden who makes a great catch then fumbles the ball before pouncing back on it setting up the Braves with 1st and 10 from the BL 43 yard line with 0:37 seconds remaining. QB Titus David would scramble and run for 28 yards down to the 15 yard line before running out of bounds with 0:15 seconds remaining. That’s where Titus would find Sr. WR Abdul Adams for a 15 yard TD on a contested pass for the game winning score. The Braves would go on to add the 2 point conversion for the final 22-14 score.

The Game MVP would go to Titus David who played a phenomenal game and led his team to the win by showing poise and trust in his receivers. Both teams played their hearts out left everything on the field and unfortunately only one team can advance to the city title game. Bartram will now go on to face Bonner-Prendergast for the City 4A title next Saturday at 4pm at the South Philadelphia Supersite.
