PIAA Class 5A Title Game Preview: Imhotep

IMHOTEP PANTHERS

PIAA District 12 – Class AAAAA
League: Philly Pub League
Head Coach: Devon Johnson

OVERVIEW

The Panthers are no stranger to the title game. Where they lack experience is actually winning the title game. In 2013 they lost to South Fayette. Their lone state title came in 2015 against Cathedral Prep.  Then from 2016-2018 they lost to Cathedral Prep. In 2021 they lost to Penn Trafford and in 2022 they lost to Pine-Richland. Could this be the year they stop a WPIAL team and return to the top spot to claim a state title? They’ve got plenty of talent.

To get this win, that talent will have to shine. The Panther defense is a turnover machine, forcing four turnovers last week against Delaware Valley. They needed some last minute heroics against a stacked Roman Catholic team a couple weeks ago. That game ended with Imhotep getting an interception to preserve the win.

How they got to the title game:

2023 Imhotep Schedule

Key Players:

DB Kenny Woseley: Penn State Commit. Dangerous DB that can fly to the ball. Also a solid kicker for Tep
QB Mikal Davis: Army commit. Davis is light years ahead as a quarterback than he was last year. He can run and throw.
RB Jabree Wallace Coleman: One of the most dangerous backs in the state. The Georgia commit can fly with the ball.
SDE Jah’Sear Whittington: “The Breadman”. Whittington is a Pitt commit that can terrorize an offensive line.
Look out for:

DB Saimire Locks. This DB has several FBS offers. Not a good idea to throw his way.
WR Kareem Abdul Haqq. Just picked up his first offers. Pitt and PSU

Keys to winning-Offense:

Keep it simple. Get the ball in the hands of the playmakers and let that massive line do their work. If Davis gets hot early Dallas is in trouble. The Indians bring the heat all the time. Keeping the QB safe will be important. Establish the run. Get Coleman and Syeer Coleman going early.

Keys to winning-Defense:

Turnovers. That’s the key. Peters Twp will try to control the tempo and run ball control. Stopping them with turnovers and jumping up an extra score will be key. The Indians have athletes on offense. Stopping their quarterback before he gets going is important.
