Franklin Field, home of the Penn Quakers and the oldest active college stadium in the United States found itself in use on Saturday, October 19th, 2024 to host the St. Joseph Prep Hawks and the Roman Catholic Cahillites. St Joes Prep coming off a 35-14 win against Cardinal O’Hara while Roman Catholic coming off a 54-24 win against Father Judge, each team looked to extend their win streak. Roman Catholic’s Semaj Beals was coming off a historic week after breaking Kyle McCord’s city passing yard record.

“He’s an extremly talented Quarterback, he’s done a great job watching over these last two years and in his third year he’s gotten better every single year. He’s got great command of the offense he’s doing a really good job of leading them and I expect big things out of this year and continuing next year and his future” Coach Tim Roken on Semaj Beals.

The First Quarter was up and down for each team. When one good thing happened, it was taken back by a bad thing. Prep started off the game receiving the ball and scoring on their first drive. Will Vokolos punched it in from seven yards early in the first to put Prep up at the start. Up 7-0 with 9:01 remaining in the first, now it was Roman’s time to respond, which they couldn’t. Forced to punt the ball went back to Prep. On the second Prep drive, Roman’s Jojo Delecce jumped the out route and picked of Charlie Foukle bringing the ball all the way to Prep’s 35 with 7:02 in the first. Not even forty seconds later, Roman got in the scoring collum when Beals found Will Felder to knot it up at 7 with 6:26 in the first.

Looking for a bounce-back drive after getting picked off, Foulke, unfortunately, threw his second pick of the day off a broken screen pass. Mykell Ford jumped the route and earned the linemen pick bringing the ball back to the Prep 45 with 4:27 in the first. After each team traded punts, Roman was back on Offense, at least up until Masiia Acrey had something to say about it. Picking off Beals and bringing it back 32 yards to the house to give Prep the lead up 14-7 with 2:08 in the first. Once Roman got the ball back again, Prep’s defense still stood tall. Alexander Haskell broke through and stripped Beals leading to Colton Anderson jumping on the ball and setting Prep up at the Roman 21 with 5 seconds left in the first.

“It’s just making sure every time we have the oppurtunity to step on the field we are alignment, assignment, and execution, and there’s some inconsistenciesthat we have to work throuh and get better at in all three phases of the game. I think our guys responded early just to play one play at a time. We know it’s a long game and that’s why we play four quarters.” Said Coach Roken.

The second quarter was much slower as the only thing that happened through the eleven minutes was Leo Ricci showing off his leg talent by drilling a 37-yard field goal early into the second. Both teams traded punts throughout the second with neither team making much of an impact. On a 4th and 11, Roman called a pooch punt and stuck Prep at their one with less than two minutes remaining. With little room to spare, Prep called two run plays to give space, then launched one up. Foulke found Freshman Jett Harrison streaking down the field and the two connected for a 97-yard touchdown which extended the Prep lead to 24-7 with 1:17 remaining in the half. The half ended with prep leading 24-7.

The second half took time with each team now getting adjusted and scoring more. While Roman started the third with the ball, prep started the third with the scoring. Ricci hit his second field goal of the day, this time from 41 yards to give prep the 27-7 lead. On Roman’s next drive, Jayson Nitz jumped the pass and Beals was picked off for his third time of the day. Nitz brought the ball back to the Roman 33, and soon after, Temple commit Rameir Hardy caught the ball and took it in from 11 yards to give Prep the 34-7 lead with 4:45 remaining in the third. When all signs pointed against Roman Catholic, Beals found Eyan Stead and Stead took the pass 62 yards to bring Roman back still down 34-14 with 3:26 in the third. The third ended with Prep up 34-14 starting the ball off in the fourth at the Roman 35.

The fourth consisted of three scores, two from Prep and one from Roman. Prep started off with the ball and Foulke pitched the ball to Jamir Rowe on a jet sweep with 9:57 in the game, Prep now led 41-14. Roman’s next drive consisted of only one play, a 92-yard pass and catch from Beals to Rayshawn Scott. Unfortunately, Roman missed the PAT and still trailed 41-20 with 9:31 in the game. The last score came from Prep. Foulke’s fourth touchdown came at the hands of Hardy for his second of the day. A 46-yard throw gave Prep their final score and put them up 48-20 with 7:29 in the game.

“He’s getting better each and every week. You see progress there as much as him and everybody else there in the program. There are still concerns and inconsistenciesthat we gotta make sure get better at, but it starts with me. I gotta make sure we put our guys in better posistions to be successful, our coaches are gonna do a great job and these seniors have done a great job at getting back to work every single week and focusing on ourselves” Coach Roken on Foulke.

Prep Looks to finish off their regular season with a win over a good Bonner-Prendie next week. When asked about them Coach Roken said “Bonner is a great, tough, gritty program. Coaches do a really good job they are really disciplined, they play hard for each other and for their coaches and we gotta get ready to play. It’s a short week for us, JV game on Monday and then we’re back to work and we’re gonna celebrate our seniors next Friday night. So it’s important that we have a great week of practice, and we’re getting better each and every single day”.
