Thursday 9/15

Edison (0-1) @ Mastbaum (0-3) 3pm @Northeast Supersite: Both teams are searching for their first win of the season. Mastbaum lost 40-14 to School of the Future, while Edison lost to Fels 30-8. I think this game will be a battle of field position and little scoring with Mastbaum winning narrowly.

Friday 9/16

Archbishop Wood (0-1) @ Northeast (3-0) 3pm: How ironic that both teams mascots are a Viking. Added fuel to this matchup is that Northeast took in 3 key Wood transfers this offseason with RB James Bermudez, LB/DE Tyrese Whitaker and LB Khadir Rowe. Wood opened their season last week with a 21-3 loss to Malvern Prep. Northeast battled back minus 4 starters to earn a comeback win at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 14-12. The Vikings defense is the key to their success especially stopping the run as they have very good defensive backs in pass coverage. Wood has a new HC while also returning 2 FBS commits in DE Eric Gardner (Army) and OL Cole Evans (Army). Another physical dual with someone 0 going lol. I’m going to go with Northeast in a overtime thriller 13-7.

Boys Latin (0-3) @ Abraham Lincoln (1-2) 3pm: The Warriors are winless but have improved each week under 1st year HC Marcus Fulton. Last weekend they dropped a contest to West Philadelphia 28-16 while Lincoln got their first win on the season with a impressive 26-13 win over Mastery Charter North. Both teams have quality skill guys at RB/WR/CB/S and this should be a fairly low scoring affair. I’ll go with Lincoln by 10.

Dobbins (2-0) @ Academy of Palumbo (0-2) 3pm @South Philly Supersite: The Mustangs are off to an impressive start. They coasted past Vaux 42-6 last week to begin league play. Palumbo has struggled offensively this season being outscored 72-8 thus far including a 42-0 shutout loss to Kensington last week. Dobbins should roll again to a big win.

Martin Luther King (1-2) @ Central (1-2) @3pm: The Cougars traveled to Central PA and fell to Wilson 37-0 last week. They’re currently on a 2 game skid while the Lancers traveled to Bishop Shanahan and fell 36-14. Both schools are only separated by 3 miles so expect a decent crowd and some hard hitting from both squads. King I feel has a little more depth & should steal a road win.

Overbrook (3-0) @ Roxborough (0-3) 3pm: The Panthers have shocked many as they’re currently undefeated, scoring over 30 points in each game and have given up only 8 points. They swarm to the ball defensively and play very disciplined. Mekhi Gordon & Nafiese McClain both are leaders for the Panthers. Roxborough has improved over the last season. While winless they have improved offensively scoring in 3/4 games this season. Their issue is defensively not getting off the field & giving up explosive plays. They also have issues sustaining drives offensively which probably means they’ll struggle against a stingy Brook defense. Look for Overbrook to cruise to a win.

Frankford (1-2) @ Father Judge (1-2) 6pm: The Pioneers finally got in the W column with a 22-0 shutout win over Benjamin Franklin. The Crusaders also earned their first W with a impressive 38-6 win over local rival Archbishop Ryan. This game serves as the final non league tune-up for both teams before they start league play. Frankford has not had success offensively as they did last year and have lost a notch defensively, while Judge has had offensive issues and inconsistency on defense. I’ll go with the home team Judge in a close game.

Imhotep (1-1) @ Malvern Prep (2-0) 7pm: The Panthers are coming off a heartbreaking 20-13 loss at Archbishop Spalding. Their offense came alive in the 2nd half and if not for a couple plays they would be sitting at 2-0. Malvern has ran through its competition thus far beating LaSalle & Wood by a combined 56-3. Tep doesn’t lose often and I can’t recall last time they’ve lost consecutive games. I expect Malvern to hit early but Tep to battle and come out with a hard fought road win heading into league play.

Simon Gratz (2-1) @ Wissahickon (0-3) 7pm: The Bulldogs look to go into league play with 3 non league wins. They boost wins over 2 Mastery programs. Wissahickon looks for their first win after hanging tough with Methacton before falling 18-8. I’ll pick the home team by 6.

Vaux (0-3) @ School of the Future (1-2): 7pm @ Germantown Supersite: Vaux has struggled mightily this season with putting the ball in the end zone, protecting the ball & getting stops defensively. Due to low numbers, injuries and inexperience from playing young guys this season is about building for the future. Their opponent the Firebirds after struggling the first two games offensively broke out scoring 40 points last week in their win over Mastbaum. The Firebirds should win going away.

Benjamin Franklin (0-1) @ Mastery Charter North (1-2) @ Germantown Supersite: The Electrons after fighting low numbers finally suited up last week and battled before falling to Frankford 22-0. Ironically Frankford benefited from Franklin’s two best players in 2021 transferring in the offseason to their program. Mastery is fresh off a hard fought loss at Lincoln. Mastery has game experience and depth on their side and I’ll pick them to win by 12+.

Kensington (1-2) @ Kipp Dubois (0-3) 1pm @ Simon Gratz Supersite: The Tigers got their first win of the season last week with a 42-0 shoutout over Palumbo. They’ll once again be heavily favorites over Kipp DuBois which is 0-3 and been outscored 135-6. Kensington will probably score 40+ again in a win.

Pope John Paul II (3-0) @ John Bartram (1-2) 1pm: Bartram finally broke through and got in the W column winning on the road in NY against Capital Prep 26-0. Pope John Paul II is currently undefeated with two wins over Philly Catholic League teams (Carroll & Judge). Bartram is young but highly competitive and will put up a fight but fall short by a score or two.

Olney (2-1) @ Germantown Academy (2-0) 1pm: The Trojans started the season off with a big upset over Father Judge, they followed that performance up with a loss at Spring-Ford (28-8) and a win at Chichester (20-7). Germantown Academy has a stout defense and an impressive win over The Hill School. Olney will hang for a while but the Patriots. pull away in the 4th quarter.

George Washington (3-0) @ Belmont Charter (2-1) 7pm @ Germantown Supersite: The Eagles have stormed to a strong start this season. They have exploded on offense the last two weeks scoring 38 points and 51 against Mastbaum & South Philadelphia respectively. Belmont is a scrappy tough team who has played up in competition in non league games to prepare for hopefully a lengthy PIAA Class A playoff run. Washington has more depth and will pull away early for a comfortable win but expect Belmont to score their points and fight all 4 quarters.
