Berwick runs away with the win against Wyoming Valley West

With five weeks in the books, and five more to go, Berwick and Wyoming Valley West entered this matchup desperate for a win.

Halfway into 2023, Wyoming Valley West already had improved on their win mark from a year ago. The Spartans did not win a game last year, this year they have found the win column just once through five weeks.

In 2023, the same can be said for the Berwick Bulldogs, with just one win through five games. A 21-7 win at Williamsport in week four was the Dawg’s only victory in 2023.

The once Wyoming Valley Conference giants are struggling as of late and are both hungry for a win. In this game, the winner would get to 2-4 and be in line for the playoffs. The loser would be 1-5 and the playoffs would be more of a hope than reality.

In the first five games, Berwick started out down 7-0 and had to try to recover early in the game. This time around, Berwick was able to strike first when Tyler Winter scampered in from 15-yards out.

One of the Spartan’s weaknesses so far this year has been their inability to score. In three of their First Five games, they failed to reach double digits. They were held scoreless through the first quarter, but a screen found Tyler Mattis and he was able to put the Spartans on the board.

Early into the game, it looked to be an intriguingly close contest that could come down to the wire. Berwick, however, had other plans. Tyler Winter scored once more and Berwick had regained the lead, they would not look back.

QB Ethan Lear was able to find the endzone from a few yards out, and Berwick now led by two scores.

After he ran it in, Ethan Lear was able to find Braylon Hawkins to give Berwick a three-score lead.

After Tyler Winter got his fair share of the endzone, it was time for the other back Jimmy DeAndrea to get in.

That would be the last score of the night and when the buzzer sounded, Berwick had won 35-7 over Wyoming Valley West.

For the losing Spartans, this was nothing surprising considering the struggles over the past few years. Their inability to move the ball and finish off drives really made it hard to stay within Berwick. Their passing game was effective for the most part, but when it mattered most, the drives did not result in points. It will be tough for Wyoming Valley West to return to the playoffs.

For the Victors, this is a breath of fresh air. When any team goes 1-4 a lot of self-doubt can set in. The best way to remove said doubt is by getting a result like this. The running game was the most effective it’s been all year. Quarterback Ethan Lear had another quietly solid game. Once again, no turnovers, and ran one in and threw one in. Berwick’s defense was shaky at times but overall played an excellent game.

After the game, Interim Coach Bo Orlando had this to say.
