CJ Curry announced as new Berwick Head Coach

The Berwick School Board voted to confirm the arrival of new Head Football Coach CJ Curry.

The Curry name has a legacy very few have in the state of Pennsylvania. CJ’s grandfather, George Curry was one of the most successful coaches in state and national history. His dad, Cozmas Curry, was a star running back for the Bulldogs.  The Curry name will be reinstalled into Berwick Football once again, this time with CJ as the Head Coach. Growing up in Berwick and seeing the affect his Grandfather put on the program has meant a lot to him. ” Growing up here, playing here and really understanding the passion and how much Berwick Football means to the community makes this program that much more intriguing.”

After two back-to-back losing seasons, CJ will have an uphill climb to turn the program around to its once former glory. Curry said, ” My vision for this program is to build it back up through a change in culture. From the outside looking in, it seemed that we lost our Berwick way in being tough, disciplined, and committed to being great.” When talking about his vision for the program.

“It’s so humbling, so exciting. Just sitting in that chair tonight at the meeting, wearing a Berwick tie that my grandfather gave me, it just kinda felt so surreal after not to long ago playing for him and acquiring some of the knowledge it takes to build a program. Knowing that he started out just like me, and now I get that chance to use my philosophy and build on the things he taught me”.

Curry is thankful that he has already built a foundation with many of the players throughout the last few years when he worked as the Middle School coach and a teacher at Berwick High School. Curry Said, “I am lucky enough to have great relationships already with most of the players, but continuing to build those relationships and go through the grind together is incredibly exciting and motivating. I coached most of these kids here so I know what they bring to the table.  We’re going to have a team meeting tomorrow, and hit the weights this week. Kinda shock the system”.

CJ’s Grandfather, Dad, sister and mom are all in the education field, and CJ himself was just hired as a teacher in the Berwick school district. “My first semester in college I went to East Stroudsburg as a sports management kid. I wanted to be around athletics. When I came home I told my grandfather what my major was and he said “what the hell is that? You’re going to get a degree in basket weaving. You need to switch your major to education and so I did”.

When the Berwick Bulldogs open up their season at home this year, they will be led by CJ Curry, Coach Curry is back in Berwick.
