When Mountaineers’ sophomore quarterback Brady Zapoticky started the game with an incompletion and an interception, it looked like a long game for him. However, he wasn’t fazed. Instead, in the second quarter, he threw two touchdown passes and Parker Bolesta added three rushing touchdowns in route to a 35-14 home victory over Crestwood. Dallas Head Coach Rich Mannello on his sophomore signal caller. “He’s a pretty tough-minded kid for a 10th grader, he’s got a short memory. He’s doesn’t get fazed.”

Crestwood started off the game with the ball. Facing an early third and 8, freshman quarterback Jaden Shedlock ran for nine yards. The Comets got all the way to the Dallas 40 yard line. They faced a fourth and 5 but the pass fell incomplete and the Mountaineers took over on downs. Dallas went three and out on their first drive. Crestwood was unable to get out of their own territory and were forced to punt. A snap went over the head of the punter and it looked like Dallas had great field position but a facemask penalty negated the play and the Comets punted again. On the second attempt, the ball once again ended up over the punter’s head and the Mountaineers got great field position at the Crestwood 17 yard line. Zapoticky’s pass ended up being tipped and intercepted by Aidan Jardine and returned all the way to the Dallas 22 yard line.

The Comets were unable to capitalize on the great field position and ending up punting the ball away. The Mountaineers rebounded on their next drive as Zapoticky found Zach Paczewski for a 38 yard completion. Then two plays later, Zapoticky found Paczewski again for a 39 yard completion to the Crestwood six yard line. Two plays later, Zapoticky found Peter Harpersberger in the right corner of the end zone from five yards out and a 7-0 Mountaineer lead with 7:46 remaining in the second quarter.

After a Comet three and out, the Mountaineers went back on offense. Parker Bolesta went for 20 yards on the first play of the drive. On a second and 13, Zapoticky went to Dylan Geskey for a 28 yard completion. On the very next play, Zapoticky would roll and threw up the ball for grabs and Paczewski came down with it for the touchdown from seven yards out and a 14-0 Dallas lead with 4:36 to go until halftime.

The Comets looked to cut down the deficit and it looked like they could get a score before the half as they drove to the Mountaineer 23 yard line but Dallas forced a fumble and recovered by Colby Klinetob who returned it to the Crestwood 35 yard line. The drive ended with a Bolesta three yard touchdown run and a 21-0 Dallas lead as we head to halftime.

The Mountaineers started with the ball in the second half but were forced to punt. The Comets looked like they were about to get a touchdown but a holding penalty called back the touchdown and were forced to punt the football away. After the Comet defense forced a three and out, the Mountaineers punted to Crestwood’s Noah Schultz and he returned the punt 70 yards for a Comets touchdown to cut the Dallas lead to 21-7 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

Crestwood attempted an onside kick but Dallas recovered it. Starting at their own 47, the Mountaineers gave the ball to Parker Bolesta as he carried the ball five times out of seven plays and scored from eight yards out for a 28-7 Dallas lead with 11:19 remaining in the game. The Comets started their next drive trying to get back into the game. The drive ended with a one yard touchdown run by Jaden Shedlock to make it 28-14 with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers on their next possession ran the ball with Bolesta and scored from four yards for his third touchdown of the game to make it 35-14 and that ended up being the final score.

Mannello on his team starting the season 2-0. “I’m happy with the weight room, our conditioning, watching the film. We’ve proved that we’re in shape. It’s Week 2, we still have a lot to learn.” Crestwood Head Coach Ryan Arcangeli on the loss. “I told the guys we’re never as good as you think, you’re never as bad as you think. We’re gonna need to grow from Week 2 to Week 3. We just need to get back to some basics.”
