Scranton Prep defeated Western Wayne 48-21 Friday night at Scranton Memorial Stadium in front of  the allowed  fan capacity of 1,800. In a crucial 3A encounter, the Cavaliers wasted no time, after the initial  kick-off, to launch an aerial attack that would  be bothersome  to the Wildcats all evening.  Paddy Grady (QB) threw  a 26 yard toss, his first of six touchdown passes, to wide receiver Robert Rossi in the opening series. The extra point was no good and Scranton Prep took an early 6-0 lead with  9:43 left in the 1st quarter.

Western Wayne failed to move the ball after the kickoff and was forced to punt. Once again, Grady took to the air and hit Max Mulligan on a 37 yard laser precision pass that put the Cavaliers ahead 12-0. Chase Stephens extra was good and  Prep’s lead was extended to 13-0 with 5:05 remaining in the 1st quarter.

Undaunted, the Wild Cats came roaring back with  a 50 yard crushing ground attack led by Zane Janiszewski. Their efforts were stymied when workhouse Janiszewski fumbled on Cavaliers 39 and Prep recovered. Grady’s  air attack continued with a screen pass to the running back London Montgomery and a streak to the big tight end Vito Gianello which led them into Wild  Cat territory.  The following  play Grady hit Mulligan on a 35 yard pass. The extra point was good and with 2:00 remaining in the 1st quarter, the Wild Cats found themselves looking a 20-0 deficit.

Western Wayne had an excellent return by James Murphy which gave the Wild Cats great field position.  A few plays later Janiszewski broke tackle for 31 yard touchdown. His fifth of the season. The extra point was good and the  Wild Cats were on the board, but behind 20-7.

Despite the rally late in the first quarter,  Western Wayne could not get solid footing in the second quarter.  Prep’s Grady would throw two more touchdown passes to junior wide receiver  Robert Rossi. The Wild Cats would  squeeze  another touchdown in the first half with three yard run by QB Cayden Brungard  that was initiated  by a 67 yard screen pass to ubiquitous running back Janiszewski.  The half would end with a commanding 34-14 Cavalier lead.

The second-half looked somewhat promising for the Wild Cats when James Murphy took the opening kick-off 56 yards and two plays later plowed six yards into the end-zone, narrowing Prep’s lead 34-21 with 6:34 left in the third quarter.

Prep shot right back with Grady’s sixth touchdown pass of the evening to Vito Gianello, increasing Prep’s lead to 41-21.  The remaining part third quarter would fine Prep stopping  the Wild Cats in every series,  In the fourth quarter with the game out of reach for Western Wayne, both teams benched  most of their starters for next week’s encounters. Prep’s found the end zone one more time  to add salt to the wound and a final score of 48-21. Prep now 2-0 travels to Mid Valley 0-2 ,  while the Wild Cat’s travel  to Honesdale to take on Hornets 0-2.
