Wyomissing stays perfect eliminating previously unbeaten Scranton Prep 35 to 14 to advance to PIAA Class 3A State Semi-Finals !

Before the game, Spartans HC, Bob Wolfrum told me that practice went good during the week, “the kids could see we got a formidable opponent, and knew they had to work hard, their running back is good, we can’t give him any running room, we just have to stay disciplined on defense and do what we do on offense.” And that they did, throughout the game holding the high powered Cavalier offense that averaged about 43 points a game, to just 14. Wyo’s defense forced a Prep three and out on their first drive of the game and after a great punt return by Amory Thompson to the Cavalier 35 yard line, the Spartans offense would go to work like they normally do, getting the ball into Tommy Grabowski’s hands. Grabowski would score shortly after on a 2 yard sweep to the right for the games first score, the kick after was good, and the Spartans would lead 7 to 0 with 8:19 to play in the first quarter. The Spartans defense would once again hold the Prep offense and force another punt and Wyomissing’s offense would score again with quickness when Drew Eisenhower, who finished the game with over 135 yards for the game, would score his first of two touchdowns of the game, the first being from 7 yards out to extend the Spartans lead to 14 to 0 early in the first quarter. There would be now score for the rest of the first quarter as Prep started to look like they were settling down. Near the end of the quarter, Prep was forced to make a decision on fourth down and 18, following a sack by big man Aiden Mack. I wasn’t sure if this was designed or not, but with a high snap on the punt attempt, #11-Robert Rossi would take off down field for about 40 yards to the Spartan 8 yard line, setting up first and goal with under a minute to go in the first.

Now in the second quarter, with Spartans leading 14 to 0, Scranton Prep as sitting at fourth down again from the 1. Liam Barrett would get the call and run it in from a yard out and the Spartan lead was cut in half, 14 to 7 with 11:20 left till halftime. On the Spartans next drive, Drew Eisenhower would set the tone and get most of the calls, one of which would go for a long gain for 27 yards, eventually scoring his second touchdown of the game, this one, from 9 yards. Wyo would now lead 20 to 7 after the point after was blocked. During the second quarter of action, Prep’s big star running back, and D1 recruit, London Montgomery(2200+ yards and 35 tds on the season) would suffer a game ending injury, of what I was told a broken arm by a family member of the fullback blocking for him. The score at the half would remain 20 to 7 Spartans leading.

Wyomissing would receive the second half kickoff and now we would see what the Spartans do best, and have been doing all season long, running the clock with short runs. To begin their opening drive of the third quarter, Wyomissing ran off 12 plays, and almost 7 minutes off the clock before scoring on a 2 yard touchdown run by Grabowski, his second of the game. Wyomissing would now lead 28 to 7 after the two-point conversion pass to Amory Thompson would be good, the ONLY pass attempted and completed by QB Ben Zechman for the game. In the final quarter of play, we would see one more score by each program, the first being an 18 yard run by Amory Thompson to put Wyomissing up 35 to 7 with 11:42 to play in the game. Following the touchdown by Thompson, Prep would get the ball, but would end up punting back to Wyo. A few plays later, the Spartans would fumble, and the Cavaliers would recover at their 27 with 5:40 to play. Backup RB, Liam Barrett would get most of the calls and with just over 2 minutes to go in the game, the Prep tall receiver Robert Rossi would haul in an 11 yard pass, keep control and twist back into the endzone for the final score of the game. Wyomissing victorious 35 to 14.

Up next for the Spartans, now 14-0, will be Neumann-Goretti Saints(13-1) in the PIAA Class 3A State Semi-Finals at a site/time TBD !
