Carlisle loses first game of the year in a shootout!

Carlisle Thundering Herd (2-0) @ William Penn (York) Bearcats (0-2)

There we’re more Lanternflies at Smalls Athletic Field in York than points scored last night, but barely. In a game that featured 15 touchdowns and wasn’t decided until the final play, the William Penn Bearcats secure their first victory of the season. Each football team has three squads, an offense, a defense and special teams. When the game is 54-47 you know both offenses were doing their job. Looking at the score you would assume Carlisle’s defense wasn’t up to snuff. William Penn would score eight touchdowns on the night, but had only one drive of over sixty yards. (20,67,26,15,59,41,51,41) Carlisle’s special teams were the reason the Thundering Herd loss this game. Carlisle kicker Theonas Mazias was the lone bright spot going 5 for 5 on extra points. The Herd struggled to get their punts off or to kick them for any distance. They fumbled one punt inside their own twenty. They messed a snap up on their one extra point attempt. We all know football is a game of momentum. Every time Carlisle would score, one the the Bearcats would immediately run the kickoff back deep into Herd territory. A couple of plays later the Bearcats would score and get right back in the game.

Carlisle came into the game missing a big weapon in Jeremiah Hargrove. They would lose Marquise Miller after his second touchdown right before the half. Playing short handed the Herd put up a gutsy performance. Both teams came out throwing the ball around in a game that lasted almost three hours. Carlisle quarterback Louie Shank threw a touchdown and ran for two more. William Penn quarterback Sam Stoner threw for 250 yards and six touchdowns. West Virginia bound back Jaheim White lived up to the hype scoring five touchdowns including the game winner with 16.2 seconds to go.

White finished the game with over a 100 yards rushing and as their number receiving target. Carlisle’s Jaqueece Morell rushed for over 170 yards after taking over for Miller. After a very long first half, Carlisle came out in the second half focused on running the ball in an attempt to slow down the Bearcats and rest many of their players who were playing both ways. Carlisle should be 3-0 right now but would continued to shoot them selves in the foot. They were able to open it up to a two possession game with just over eleven minutes to go. But allowed four touchdowns in the final period to give this one away. Every time the Bearcats faced a third and short, one of the Herd would jump offsides. The Herd appeared to have the game won with just over two minutes to go after stopping the Bearcats on a two point conversion, but a holding call would do them in. The play Carlisle coach Brett Ickes will be questioned about was his decision to go for it on fourth and three from his own 40 with just over thirty seconds to go. I agreed with the call. His special teams had let him down all day. The play call is up for debate. The result was a William Penn stop and 15 seconds later they were in the end zone. This will be a tough one for the Herd to get over!
