Mid Penn Commonwealth Game

Altoona Lions(5-3) at Carlisle Thundering Herd(4-4)

The Carlisle Thundering Herd took one step closer to securing a playoff spot with a 24-14 victory over the visiting Altoona Lions. It however did not start out well for the Bison on Homecoming/ Senior Day. The Lions went 77 yards on their opening drive in seven plays aided by two Carlisle penalties. All seven plays were runs the last one by Bron Mosley for a quick 7-0 lead. Carlisle would turn the ball over, on their first play from scrimmage by fumbling on its own 33. They would throw an interception on their second possession. The game could have been over quickly but the Carlisle defense would respond to both threats. After the first turnover, the Herd got the ball back after forcing a field goal attempt. The snap was high and Altoona was turned away. The second drive ended when the Lions tried a quarterback draw on fourth and eight from the Carlisle 24. It was stuffed. Carlisle would than drive 75 yards in six minutes, scoring half way through the second quarter. Jeremiah Hargrove scoring the first of his three touchdowns on fourth and goal. Both teams got the ball twice more in the first half. Altoona punting twice after two, three and outs. Carlisle would punt once and throw another interception as the first half ended.

Carlisle start the second half running the ball. As they moved the ball near midfield they faced a fourth and one. They converted on a dive play. On the next play, they put Hargrove, who ended the game with 160 yards rushing in the slot.

Hargrove ran straight down the middle of the field catching a beautifully thrown pass from Louie Shank in stride for a 48 yard touchdown. Both teams would exchange punts on their next two possessions with Altoona slowly gaining field position. Half way through the fourth quarter the Lions tied the game on a 14 run by George Jackson. Carlisle got a good kick return to start their next drive near midfield. They were able to get inside the Lion red zone before facing a fourth and long. Senior first year kicker Theo Mazias than kicked a 33 yard field goal to give the Bison a three point lead. The Lions went three and out and punted. Altoona who had three time outs was hoping for a defensive stop. Hargrove had other plans, scoring his third touchdown from 34 yards out. Altoona would turn it over on downs and Carlisle would take a knee.  Final Carlisle 24 Altoona 14
