Central York running back Legend Johnson had made his college decision. He’s heading to Kent St after his senior season. The senior has rush for 1,985 yards and 32 trips to the endzone on 277 carries in his sophomore and junior seasons. The 6-1, 195 pound Johnson also hauled in 250 yards worth of passes. His Head Coach, Gerry Yonchiuk, says “He is a big physical runner with top end speed! He as timed at 4.49 Laser this summer. He can run through a tackle or utilize his speed and run around defenders. As a Junior he tallied 24 Touchdowns. Legend has excellent hands as well and is a weapon catching the football. He averaged 8.2 yards per carry last fall. He has worked extremely hard this off season and has put on ten more pounds”.
We caught up to Legend to find out more about his choice and the player himself:
PFN: Why did you choose to commit to the Golden Flash before your Sr season?
I chose to commit to Kent State before my senior season because I found a place that truly believed in me. From the coaching staff to the players, they made me feel like a priority and showed me exactly how I fit into their program. I didn’t want to spend my senior year chasing offers when I already knew where I wanted to be. Now I can focus on leading my team, having the best season possible, and preparing myself to be ready when it’s time to get to Kent. The relationships, opportunity, and vision they shared with me made it feel like home.
PFN: Who was your biggest influence there, who recruited you?
My biggest influence was definitely the coaching staff, especially Coach Braxton – RB Coach. He was the coach who recruited me and built a real relationship with me throughout the process. He was honest, consistent, and made me feel like a priority from the beginning. Beyond football, he talked to me about my future, development, and what kind of young man I can become. That relationship meant a lot to me and played a big role in my decision. I also have to mention Brenden Smith, my high school teammate who currently attends Kent State.
PFN: What are they getting in player like you?
They’re getting a complete running back who’s hungry to prove himself. I’m going to bring speed, power, toughness, and a relentless work ethic. Most importantly, they’re getting someone who’s never satisfied and is always looking to get better.
PFN: What was the recruiting process like for you?
The recruiting process was exciting, but it was also a learning experience. There were ups and downs, moments of uncertainty, and times when I had to stay patient and trust God’s plan. In the end, it helped me grow as both a football player and a young man.
PFN: What position were you recruited for?
Running Back. They see me as an every-down back who can run between the tackles, make explosive plays, and contribute in multiple ways within the offense.
PFN: Do you know what you’d like to study?
My Dad owns his own business, so I’m leaning towards business…but I’m still exploring my options. Ultimately I want to pursue a degree that will set me up for success long after football is over.
PFN: What role did your parents play in your decision?
My Dad is my biggest influence…he is my dad, coach and trainer. He instilled in me at a young age what it takes to be great. Both parents played a huge role. They encouraged me to look beyond football and focus on relationships, academics, and finding a place that felt like home. They never pressured me but always helped me see the bigger picture.
PFN: What do you think is the most exciting thing about the program?
The opportunity to be part of a program that is building something special. The energy, vision, and belief the coaching staff has for the future is exciting to be around.
PFN: What are you most looking forward to while playing for them?
Competing at the highest level, developing as a player, building relationships with my teammates, putting my talents on display for the world to see and helping the team win championships.
PFN: Tell everyone out there in the football world something they’d never know about you until you told them:
A lot of people see me as a football player, but I’m actually a pretty quiet and shy person who enjoys spending time with family and helping younger athletes. I’m sort of a hermit crab…working out or home.
PFN: Who is the person who most influenced you in your football career?
My dad. He’s been my coach, trainer, mentor, and biggest supporter. He’s sacrificed a lot to help me become the player and person I am today. He was also a great running back who is in his High School’s Hall of Fame, played in College and Minor League football for 6 years. Also my brother Ali Johson II “Duece” I definitely would not be the player I am without competing and training with him daily.
Why do you play football?
I play football because I love competing. I love challenging myself, being part of a team, and using the game as a platform to create opportunities for my future.
What would you do to improve the recruiting process?
I would make communication more transparent for athletes. Honest communication helps players and families make informed decisions and reduces a lot of unnecessary stress.
PFN: What is it you’d like all your high school teammates and fans to know about your decision that you might have a hard time saying in person?
I’m grateful for everyone who supported me throughout this journey. This decision wasn’t just about me…it’s a reflection of the people who invested in me, pushed me, and believed in me along the way.
What are your goals for this coming season?
To help my team win, be a great leader, continue improving every week, break the rushing record and leave a legacy that younger players can follow.
Tell everyone why you think football is good for a community
Football brings people together. It creates pride, teaches discipline, builds relationships, and gives young people positive role models to look up to.
what is your favorite pregame ritual?

Music of choice:
A mix of hip-hop and motivational music that gets me locked in and focused.
