Cocalico Head Coach Bryan Strohl addresses his team after a 42-2 win over Elizabethtown

Cocalico the 12th seed in the district 3 5A PIAA State playoffs beat the 5th seed Elizabethtown 42-2 Friday night in the 1st round of the PIAA Playoffs. Cocalico ran over and around all night on the Elizabethtown defense, as they had no answer for the Cocalico option attack. Equally impressive was the defense of Cocalico when they shut down the potent Elizabethtown offense.  Quarterback Josh Myer had 3 rushing touchdowns and Fullback Sam Steffey had 2 rushing touchdowns for a dominating win. Head Coach Bryan Strohl on the win “We told our guys we are peaking right now. We are taking care of the ball and our defense is playing relentless and tough right now”. Quarterback Josh Myer on the team’s mindset “Coach said all week the seeds are thrown out the window and talked about how in the past Cocalico was a lower seed and went far in the playoffs”.

Cocalico took the opening drive and drove 80 yards on 5 plays for the touchdown when Josh Myer rushed it in from 5 yards out. After a fumble by Elizabethtown on the 1st possession, Sam Steffey rushed it in from 6 yards out. It was Cocalico 14-Elizabethtown 0. The avalanche continued for Cocalico when Steffey and Myer each chipped in another touchdown in the 1st half. The last touchdown of the night was with 6 seconds left in the half when Myer rushed it in.  The only blemish was when the snap of their punting went over his head and into the end zone for a safety. Cocalico went to the half with a 28-2 lead. Myer on the touchdown to end the half “Nice icing on the cake end at the end of half for the touchdown”.

Cocalico continued it dominance in the 2nd half when Myer scored another rushing touchdown to take a commanding 35-2 lead. Then Dan Horning rushed in for another Touchdown. Cocalico continued it’s dominance with a 42-2 lead. Coach Strohl said “It is important to set the tone. Last year our playoff performance was not what we wanted it to be”.

Cocalico will play at Gettysburg next Friday night. They might be a 12th seed but they are playing their best football on the season with their 4th straight win on the year. Cocalico believes in their team and they should have a good chance to make it a competitive game and possibly come away with the victory next week. I wouldn’t count out this team.
